CFE and game crashing - resolved   1 | 2

No good. Sniff.

REINSTALL #11
Uninstalled everything Creatures.
Removed Gameware folder from system.
reinstalled
1. Albian Years
2. Exodus
both in Documents>Creatures folder

Changed machine.cfg in DS to point to correct files in Documents

Starting up DS it says I do not have C3 installed
machine.cfg goes back to program folder locations.

Looks like I will have to go back to Program folders, at least it was working that way at first.

After a week of messed up games, error messages, backups, and 12 overinstalls/uninstalls/reinstalls, and numerous people trying to help me on this forum, i have good news and bad news.

Good news is I have my DS up and running, all 3 of my worlds back and although C3 will not run standalone, i can do docked worlds which i prefer anyway. All 3 of my backed up worlds were docked.

Bad news is I still have the problem that started all this, the Incubator in all three worlds is stuck shut. In newly created worlds the Incubator is ok.

So it seems I could either abandon the three defective worlds and move my norns, or try to get by with the existing ones. Eggs were also not hatching naturally when the problem started, and I have not tested that yet. However, one of them has C12DS so maybe I will be able to use the C1 incubator.

Thanks again to everyone for not only your help but your encouragement to keep trying to get everything back to working. I think without this forum I would have given up entirely.

Yay! I know it's not perfectly fixed, but I'm so glad to hear you've got your game running again! It sounds like something went wrong in your existing worlds. But hurray! I'm seriously very excited about this, as I said I would be. Hurray for you finally getting back to playing!

Thanks Jessica! I think it has something to do with my attempt to install CFE without knowing what i was doing, and somehow something in the hatching process autokilled. Working on making V1.2 of each world and moving creatures over.

So if I want to introduce CFE, is it better to just install an egg file or two of norns that are already installed non-CFE?

yeah, trying to install or inject egg agents that depend on sprites you don't have can cause problems, for the CFE breeds from vampess I'd make sure you already have that breed installed and have hatched at least one creature of that breed, then you should have no problems with the egg agent. In fact I wouldn't even put the CFE egg agents for any breeds you don't have in your my agents folder at all, even just the missing face glyph for a breed can cause problems cycling through that breed in the egglayer, before you even try to inject the egg.

To be safe, I'd also go into the wolfling controls in all your worlds (Ctrl+W) and turn off autokill before anything else (that setting is saved for a world between sessions, so it stays off in that world once you set it that way), this way the next time something goes wrong, you just get an error message and a prompt on what to do (ignore is usually best), instead of the game deciding to remove your breeding scripts, hatchery, egg layers, or any other necessary parts of your world...

That sounds like exactly what happened, my incubator autokilled. Thanks for the method to turn it off.

I still want to introduce CFE but now I know not to just dump it all into the game.

I have recreated the first of my three worlds and started moving my norns in. So far so good, the first two had twins while I was busy importing more.
