Although I'm no moderator here, I can imagine a report function would be useful. I've had a difficult time in the past reporting problems on forums that don't have such a thing, especially when the posts aren't numbered... It's definitely helped to have such a feature on Ctopia.

Dunno if this has been mentioned yet or how much of a pain it would be, but I would adore a "view unread posts" function where I could just get a list of all the posts I haven't read read without having to go into each individual forum to do it.
Also, I realize this would be a bit of work, but seeing as this is pretty much the biggest community hub left for the games, I think it would be very beneficial to have a series of FAQ/Help pages for the community/games, since we seem to get the exact same questions over, and over, and over, AND OVER again "Why doesn't the warp work/Why don't I get an activation email/Where do I get the breed packs" etc, etc. Kind of to the same effect of the sticky in the Help board, just more organized and detailed and possibly searchable. Maybe even allow users to submit their own answers/guides/help write-ups. It might just be nice to have all that information in one place in plain sight outside of just the forums.

To be honest, I think something that is becoming an issue is that I don't really play Creatures much anymore. Therefore I no longer have questions about the warp, use the downloads pages, etc. I think this is creating a disconnect between what the community needs and what Creatures Caves is providing.
Therefore I think it might be beneficial for us to select people to be "supervisors" of different sections of the website. For example, someone who is really into COBs/Agents could supervise that area of the website and give me very specific feedback regarding the issues with COBs pages. Otherwise I think we may continue to encounter issues whereby features are missing that people really want.
However, I do plan on being very involved in Creatures 4 so hopefully this will help curb some of these problems.

Make it easier to quote people without bunches of copypasting?
Also, some of the images in the images section, the thumbnails don't work, but the whole images are fine.

I'd like to have a spoiler-box, where I just see a button reading "spoiler" and when I clik it it expandes to show what ever is inside. Wold be usefull to post long scripts, much listed information (like a list of all ones agents and breeds sorted by category) and obviously spoilers. |

People are often too generous with those spoiler boxes. They don't only hide spoilers, but almost everything. Then you have to open like 6 spoiler boxes in order to understand a single post.

I would be happy to volunteer to help out with anything, Rascii! I've seen a few ideas about having written content and having individuals in charge of certain sections. I'm no expert in everything, but I'm willing to write up anything that could be useful! I think these sections would be most useful for newer players, or those looking for specific answers. We still get a few new or returning players from time to time, which amazes me. But it's impossible to put down Creatures!
Good luck with all of the revamp stuff! I look forward to seeing the new design and the new features!

Okay, this isn't really something to improve the forum, but perhaps the old C1toDS Grendel Page could be restored?

Maybe make it easier for CreatureLink to be accessed from the main CC.com?

Can we please get rid of the contacts page, or make it so that it can't be seen unless you're a logged-in member of Creatures Caves?
Also, I think the character limit on thread titles is still wonky. I was able to type in "Anger & loneliness in ettins" as a title when I made a thread recently before it chucked a hissy and wouldn't let me type more in, and the thread title came out as "Anger & loneliness in etti" instead.

Malkin: What is CreatureLink?
I was planning on deleting the contacts page, as well as numerous other pages, in the revamp.
Minimalism will be the mantra of the upcoming design.
Which specific countries would you like to see, DisasterMaster?

CreatureLink is Jessica's mini site, which is hosted on Creatures Caves.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned RSS yet, it would be great on the news page if nothing else.

Ah, I guess I should be aware of websites that I host. Hehehe. I knew Discover Albia of course but I hadn't seen CreatureLink yet.
mfb: RSS would be neat. I'll look into it.
What do you mean by "active thread" link, Jagotka?

Like a link that would display all currently active topics; to expand upon the 3 newest threads on the main page.

Since topics are listed according to latest reply, the main page of each forum displays all of the currently active topics already.

I think what Jagotka might mean is something like that but across the entire forum. PHPBB has a feature that shows you all threads that have been active since the last time you visited, which I've found very useful in the past.

Noo D:
I like it better than phpBB. As long as it's functional that's what matters, not whether it has all the exact same features. CCaves has charm.
I don't think we need an "active threads" list anyways--we can already see that there are active threads very easily because of the stars next to the forums/threads. Just going to the forum index page will tell you exactly where there are active threads.
The only thing I think is really needed along that vein, would be a "mark as read" button... instead of having to click each thread in a forum to make it register as visited.

Aw, yeah, don't do that Rascii. I'm with Ghosthande: charm is what makes these forums special and one of a kind. They have character. By all means take suggestions onboard, but it's your site still, you don't have to implement everything!
A "mark as read" option would be useful. |

^ seconded.
You save yourself more headache than you may know by not running CCaves off of any number pre-packaged community software. which are not only targets for spam, but often hacking too (especially if you let updates lapse)
(But if you wrote all this from scratch, I'm sure you're aware of that already, hah.)

Okay, I'll stick to my custom scripts. And there are only about six weeks left of school, so once summer starts I'll have much more free time to implement all of these wonderful ideas.

Wow, this is all from scratch? I'm impressed -- great job!!!
(I'm saying that as someone who, in the far distant past, developed a threaded message forum app from scratch, and has the scars to prove it!)

A little bit more info since I really want RSS on CC.com as it's the main way I keep up with the CC:
PHP RSS libraries are pretty easy to drop in; I couldn't tell you of one off-hand but google could. RSS is simple enough you could write your own if you really wanted to.
What I'd most like to see feeds on is the news page, each individual forum, and the forum as a whole. (latests posts + latest topics? as a similar example, most WordPress installs have multiple feeds like that, a feed for the blog posts and a feed for blog comments.) RSS on the features like Ask Laura and CAOS chaos would also be a great plus. It would be trivial to have additional feeds per-thread for even more granularity too
The RSS feed for posts in a forum / in all forums would essentially fulfill the request for an 'active topics' view, since it would show the topics that had been posted in most recently.

no kidding about the custom software. Many recalled nightmares dealing with the spam on ready-made BB kits.

Feature request:
Edited posts reset the "unread" flag, so we can avoid double-posting while insuring that added info doesn't get missed by people involved in the thread.

I agree with Geek2Nurse - editing the final post in the topic should have the function of bumping the topic and making the blue star turn white again so that people know that there's new stuff to be read.

I'd actually argue against that change; most post edits are inconsequential (spelling errors, logic errors etc) and it won't be obvious to the user WHAT has been changed and in which post.
