Creator Policies   Development   Ghosthande | 4/2/2015  log in to like post  5

A list of policies for Creatures developers past and present, detailing the conditions of filesharing and/or rehosting their works.

This information comes from readme files and other documentation provided by the creators, but the policies listed below cannot be guaranteed to be true for all of that creator's works. Collaborative projects in particular are likely to be subject to different conditions.

If you are looking to rehost or otherwise redistribute a creator's work, you are encouraged to consult any documentation that may have come with it to ensure that you are looking at their most current and relevant policy.

Methods of redistribution fall into two categories. Filesharing is here defined as the act of sharing a work (such as an agent, breed or metaroom) with specific people, usually via email. Rehosting is the act of uploading a work to make it publically available on another web site.

Assuming that an author is open to having their work shared or rehosted, it is considered basic etiquette to ensure that any documentation (such as readme files) that were provided with the work remain packaged with it if at all possible. Proper credit should also be given to ensure that any recipients are aware of the work's origin.

I seem to remember Helen posting on the Gameware forums and allowing people to rehost her stuff - and the last known mirror of her site states "If you play creatures and you'd like to use any of the downloads or information on a webpage of your own, feel free. It'd be nice if you credit me for the stuff I've written and made, but if you don't I won't lose any sleep over it. " There's also a bit on her copyrights page giving conditions for reposting cobs and agents.

I intend to, when it's possible to do so. But Ylukyun posted hers in the Mods section--so I can't exactly link to that here.

I think it might helpful to link to the thread or post when a policy is 'stated on Creatures Caves' (such as RProgrammer's statement) - that way, it's easy for people to check the datedness of the statement.

The clarification at the top of the article helps. Thank you for adding that.

An "unverified policy" thing sounds like a good idea to me. We could add "unverified" to one of the columns, and change it to verified once we contact the creator. It helps avoid any confusion about whether or not it's the creator's current policy, and probably some other things I can't think of at the moment.

Don might be a good person to start the creator hunt with. They answered my email back in December about some messed up links on their site.

I think this has gone on long enough. Ghosthande, Jessica: If the two of you need to continue this discussion, please do it via private message. This isn't the right place for it.

Wow, Ghosthande. I have very little to respond to your response with. I'll be leaving Creatures Caves for good. Just trying to help out and make sure that this resource would be accurate and helpful.

Well, no, but I still think input from the members is valuable, particularly because this resource was written for everyone to act as a guide.

Some interesting and important concerns have been brought up and I see no reason why we can't talk about changes to resources just because these members aren't part of the staff.
