| 3D Modeling the Creatures 2 World | |

My computer refuses to run Creatures 2 no matter what I do, so I have decided the next best thing is to model the world so I can "experience" it even though I'm not playing the game. Perhaps one day I can even make a short video or 1st person virtual reality game, if my motivation/school allows it.
I use a student version of Maya for my modeling purposes. For now, the textures will be very simplistic, but I hope to one day be able to add more complex textures/bump maps/lighting.
My first model is the Zander fish:

Feel free to request objects from the vanilla world - I will try not to do third party COBs until I finish most of the actual world. |

Looking very good! Did you use nurbs to make the fish?

I only got to play Creatures 2 once in the past when I was younger because my grandfather's co-worker let me borrow their copy of the Creatures Trilogy.
The world was so beautiful but I was too dumb to get the Norns to do anything so I got frustrated and gave up. 
I am excited to see what more you make!

@jcnorn: What is being displayed is a regular polygon Zander with the Smooth preview on it It's not actual geometry yet, but what you get when you press the 3 key on Maya. I believe there is some nurbs math involved in it (it's not the same as doing actual mesh smoothing) but it's a quick way to make things look round. There is an option to make it real geometry but it usually makes a ton of verts!

Yes, it looked very smooth so I was thinking either the smooth view or the nurbs I remember when I did fish in maya I used nurbs first and then converted it into mesh. So was curious if you went at it the same way I did 
The non-smooth fish look great too! |

I have not learned how to model starting off with nurbs! I don't think it would be difficult once I get used to thinking in beziers.
I made a goldfish!

I'm not too fond with how the smooth mesh interacts with textures...it is a little visible on the Zander fish, but on this fishy it is very apparent that it slides a lot (and my photoshop lines are showing)
I also tried adding a bump map full of scales but that didn't look too great. Oh well, I hope these simple guys are good enough? |

I like them a lot in their simplicity. It's a very nice artstyle I think 
Nurbs aren't super hard, you just need to remember to convert it into mesh when you are done manipulating the curves  |

These look great! Have you thought about using a 3D sculpting program to add detail onto your models? |
