I came home from work today to be told that my cat, Rodney, had been run over and has died. He was only three years old, and such a small little thing. :(

Thing is, none of us saw him being hit by the car, or have seen his body. My mum had thought him missing, so was searching and knocking on all the doors in an attempt to find him. Then a neighbour come round earlier and said he saw two council men, standing beside a dead white cat at the side of the road, when he got back from work. He then identified the cat as being Rodney, from a photo Mum showed him. Apparently, a van came and picked Rodney's body up. This is all we have got to go by. We don't even know if this was a council van, or what.

Sorry, I just really need to talk/have some comfort right now. I feel devastated. Rodney was an important member of our family, and not only am I feeling like my cat has died, but it feels doubly worse not knowing where his body has been taken to. My parents have tried phoning different numbers and visiting the council this afternoon, but so far no luck.

I'd just feel a tiny bit better if I knew that we had Rodney and could bury him in the garden and say goodbye. There's just no closure right now.

I'm so sorry to hear this. :( I wish words had more effect so that I could console you.

Thanks Moe. I feel like nothing can console me at the moment. We've even tried phoning around the local veterinary surgeries, but no luck there either. I feel guilty as well - this morning, before I left for work, I let Rodney out of my bedroom window because he wanted to go outside. I can't help but think that maybe if I hadn't of done that, he wouldn't have crossed the road. Or if he'd gone downstairs and out of the cat flap instead, he still may've crossed the road, but he would've missed the car that hit him. :(

I'm really sorry for this happening to you. I know that pets get a part of your life, and losing them is really a pity. :(

The thoughts of that they'll be safe in heaven can help.

Its horrible losing a pet. At least you most likely gave him a great life. Theres really no way to console losing anything you love though, as it is a wound only time can heal. In due time, you'll feel much better. But you'll always have fond memories of him.

In my nerd cave, nobody can hear you scream.

And you can't blame yourself for what happened. If it had been any other day, and he had been let out any other way, it might still have happened.

It's not like he knew, or you knew. It's not yours or anybody else's fault.

If you follow causation far enough, anything can seem like your fault. As Moe said, awful as it is; no one is really to blame, least of all you. What Rodney did have to thank you for was a pleasant, comfortable life and plenty of love.

I'm sorry about Rodney. My cat Tigger escaped too, when I was eight. Rodney had a good life with you, with a family that doted on him - you had good times together. :) I found that with Tigger, eventually the pain faded, and I was able to feel happy that I'd had him, rather than sad that he was gone. Perhaps having a symbolic goodbye would help? Burying something of his or planting something in his honour?

Aw hun, I'm so sorry you lost your kitty. :( I've lost a few cats over the years, especially as a child. My favorite kitten Christy was hit by a car. It happened right after we'd decided not to lock them in the barn at night anymore. We always regretted letting them out of the barn so early, thinking that if we had waited longer she might not have died.

But like Moe said, you really can't blame yourself when something like that happens to a pet. Christy might still have gotten hit by a car some other time, being locked in the barn that morning wouldn't have made up for her lack of experience the next day, or the next. Ultimately, we had to let her go some time, even if it did mean taking that chance.

You weren't gambling with Rodney's life, you were doing what you could to make him happy and give him an opportunity to live out his life the way every cat wants to, because you loved him. That's what matters.

Laura, I'm so sorry about your loss. :( My family's cat was put down last year. It was a few days before my graduation, and I didn't get a chance to say goodbye (no one even told me what was going on until the day after he was put down), so I unfortunately think I have a good idea of what you're going through, and it sucks, and I hate to see someone else going through it. *hugs*

Please don't blame yourself for what happened to Rodney; I don't see how it could have possibly been your fault, and chance is too complicated to worry about what you could have done differently to prevent X or Y.

You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there.

Thanks for all the support and words of comfort everyone and sorry that I don't know what else to say other than that, I feel like my brain's all jumbled up. :( I really appreciate you all though. And thanks Malkin, I will suggest the idea of getting a plant to my Mum.

I just want to find the body. It hurts me to think he could be just dumped in the back of someone's van, or worse. I won't feel at ease until we do and if we don't, it'll be ages before we'll be able to get over it.

I'm sorry. Yesterday, I had a tiny kitten that I rescued after it had been abandoned die in my arms, and I know how it feels. I've also lost many cats like that, disappearing and never being seen again, usually only at a year or so old, and don't even know now whether they're dead or alive.

I feel so guilty too. You know it's not your fault, but can't help but feel really guilty. My only consolation is that his brother is still alive and has a chance.

I hope you find the body and can give your cat a proper burial.

How sad. :(

The council could have at least checked to see who owned Rodney instead of picking up his body and treating it like a piece of rubbish. That wouldn't happen to a human's body, now would it?

Sorry for a bit of a rant, but I hope you feel better soon.

*Hugs Laura*

Thanks C-Rex. Rodney was micro-chipped, but we don't know what condition his body is in. If it's in a really bad state, then tracking the chip might prove difficult. So far though, none of the local vets have reported a dead cat being brought in. I had an exhausted night's sleep last night. Rodney would usually wake me up throughout the night to be let out of my bedroom window, and I'd have given anything to be woken up by him last night, even though usually it would've annoyed me...

I'm sorry for your sad loss, c1anddsaddict. :( Take comfort from what the others have said here, I am - that these things aren't anybody's fault.

That must be devastating, that is such a terrible thing to happen.

*hugs*

It was probably the council I presume, but it must be so difficult having to contact the authorities to find out.

I am so sorry for your loss.

Thanks Don. We're now starting to give up on the idea of finding Rodney; I think we've tried every avenue possible. One consolation is that, this way, we only get to remember him as being alive and prancing around like the happy cat he was. I don't think any of us could bear to see what state he's in now if we found him. It's not an image we want in our heads.

Edit: Here's a photo I've just found of Rodney as a kitten. :'( I wish I hadn't found it really, it's set me off crying again, but I thought you'd all like to see it. He really was a gorgeous cat.

He was lovely.

I found a video of my puppy the other day who passed away some years ago, and I still find it devastating.

They become family, and grieving takes time. Its so sad.

*hugs* I'm sorry to hear it...a few years ago a cat of mine, Buddy, was run over next door in their driveway. I didn't see what he looked like, but dad said it wasn't pretty. I was so sad.

Rodney looks like he was adorable. If you'd like, Laura, I can draw a picture of him for you.

That's sad about your puppy Don. :(

Oh Panda-mist, that would be a huge comfort and I know my Mum would also really appreciate that - yes please. :) I'm sorry to hear about your loss too.

At least none of us are alone in how we're feeling.

What did he enjoy doing the most?

You're a star. *hug*

By the way, thank you, those of you, for the kind statuses of condolence. I saw them all and I felt really touched and supported. I'm still finding it really difficult; I find myself going in and out of bouts of grief. One minute I'll be fine and the next minute I'll be crying and I won't know where it's come from. I've been hit by it all harder than I ever imagined. It feels like I've lost a relative - well Rodney was really, he was part of the family. Small gestures like that really make a difference though. :)

Yeah, it is hard...even losing my budgies makes me sad. I lost another one recently, had her for about seven years and she developed a tumor.

I've got the sketch down pat just about. :) Next is the color. Sorry if it takes a few days, I intended on giving it some nice details instead of rushing it.

Aw, I'm sorry to hear about that. :( Seven years is a long time to own a Budgie.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this picture of Rodney. Don't be sorry, I don't mind at all about how long it takes. :)

Laura, I know all the "sorries" in the world won't make you miss your dear Rodney any less. But I really am very sorry that you and your family have to go through this. I know what it's like to lose a beloved cat.

But please don't feel guilty. You had no way of knowing, and at the very least you made Rodney happy by letting him outside.

Rodney is gorgeous, by the way. :)
