I see you went Christmas shopping - what did you buy?

The box Blue had contained a gift card for my friend. I also bought a fancy-shmancy hat for my brother and some perfume for my mum.

Well, tomorrow we have Christmas Day in Holland, but we already have Christmas decorations all over the place, including a big plastic Christmas tree in our house. ;)

We don't have a Santa Claus here and we don't get presents during Christmas. But instead we have Sinterklaas* on the 5th of December. But we still celebrate Christmas with its original purpose. :)

* The Dutch/Belgian version of Santa, as you can see at his name.

Our only christmas decorations are three ornate wise men on the mantlepiece above the fireplace. I prefer it that way.

I have just re-discovered the delights of latin baroque christmas tunes!

We have a little Araucaria sapling in a pot on the kitchen counter bar. That's our Christmas tree, small and cute and it doesn't shed needles. :P We don't really decorate much, but we've been making little graham cracker houses and decorating them with icing. Florida's so humid though, we have to put them in the oven at night to harden them up, or they'll get soft.

I can't post what I'm getting my mother because she peeks over my shoulder when I'm typing sometimes. :P

I don't know if I have any favorite Christmas songs. Michael Card has so many good ones.

So many books! William Burroughs, Dorothy Parker, Stephan Fry, Will Self and Dante. Too bad I have so much Jane-Flippin-Austin to read before I get back to uni. I hate to neglect these new paper babies.

I also got the most delightfully tasteless tartan dress, a diary, some facepaint, a blackboard and a Stylophone, which I think my sister is already regretting buying for me. :P

Stephen Fry's 'The Fry Chronicles' by any chance? I got that too! He uses a lot of long words I don't understand; I've been reading it with a dictionary at my side. :P

I also got some awesome fleecy pajamas, fleecy leopard-print slipper boots, so much Christmas chocolate, a very floral, sequine shoulder bag that I've just fallen in love with, and some other pretty things. :D

Not the Fry chronicals, though I did that that for my mother. I got The Stars Tennis Balls and Making History.

And Harlequinade, I keep a diary every year. Mostly for appointments addresses and notes. The artsy/emotional/rambley stuff goes in my notebook, which I nerdily page reference in my diary if I've written in my notebook about an event on a certain day.

This year's diary has all the features ;) Pull out address book, calendar style dates at the front, little pocket at the back, and the essential wad of blank pages. It's also renaissance in style, and looks delightfully battered in a pretty, leathery way.

Humbugs are a food? Huh. Never knew that. I thought Dickens made the word up.

I wonder if anyone has ever actually used a diary that they were gifted with.

I have! Diaries are a common Christmas gift for me because I usually go through one or two books a year. :P

(edit: I think we may be talking about different diaries, though, now that I'm rereading the thread.)

And over here in California, I'm the only one in my family awake right now, so no presents yet. I tried to sneak into the garage and grab the rest of our Christmas decorations because it turns out we never finished decorating the tree, but I think my mum shoved them back into the attic already and I can't get to them 'cause her car's in the way. :c

So what did you all THINK you were going to get for Christmas? And did you guess any of it right? Most of it?

I thought I was going to get a bunch of squares of fudge. The reason being that I had six presents that were tiny wrapped 1-square-inch boxes. They were heavy and felt solid, so I thought, you know, fudge. What else is it going to be?

As it turns out, they were those pewter Monopoly playing pieces. My mom got me Transformers Monopoly. :D And she'd hidden the box under her bed since it would be too obvious a shape if it were wrapped.

I guessed the other present right in category--it was a book. On art, which is really nice.

The biggest one--which I couldn't figure out--was an electric fleece throw. I think she's trying to give me a hint to keep my icy cold hands to myself. :P

Oh, and the thing I got for her was Resident Evil 4 for the Wii. Just one present, because I'm taking her shopping later, and you know, it's funner that way and she can buy whatever she wants.

Most of them I knew I was getting, because like you're taking your mum shopping for presents, mine took me shopping. :P I did get a couple of surprises though, like a comfy pair of blue jogging pants. I love them because they'll be perfect for lounging around the house, especially after a long shift at work!

As it turns out, they were those pewter Monopoly playing pieces. My mom got me Transformers Monopoly.

That sounds like the most awesome surprise present ever, Ghosthande! :D I'm a die-hard fan, and Monopoly is a great tradition in our house. We're all playing Disney Monopoly tomorrow when my boyfriend comes round for the day. He won't stand a chance. ;)

Happy Christmas everyone!

My mum bought me books with ex-Yugoslavia songs in hipermarket. That were the presents I got.

My country (BiH) isn't decorated because some people decided not to decorate the cities like mine. A lot of residents of my city said it's very sad thing that cities in my country won't be decorated and that the guys that decided that are all thiefs that don't think about kids but only want to decorate their own houses. We actually have some decorations (sadly, they are barely and rarely seen, they are Bethlehem stars) for which I believe they are older than me. Every year there are same decorations. Don't wrongly understand what I said. You might think my country is poor. There's a money but some people are very, very greedy and want everything only for themselves.

It was a great surprise! I'd had my eye on the game since I saw it online back in September (ish), but it was so expensive. And my mom doesn't usually like Monopoly. So it was a total surprise.

I love it, though. I'm the sort of person who can sit down and play four hours straight. We have a game laid out on the dining room table right now, giving my mom a break. Good thing we rarely eat dinner there. :P

Sounds like a perfect Christmas pastime. :P I can't wait 'til we crack open the board tomorrow. Christmas isn't Christmas without Monopoly! I don't know about you, but I've been told that I'm pretty ruthless when I play, my competitive streak really comes out.

Holy Christmas carol.

On the 23rd, I went out to find the family's unusually loyal cat to put her in for the night, but came up empty-handed. I took the dog out three times that evening trying to look for her, and my mum went out a couple of times on her own to look for her as well, but we couldn't find her. We both searched our neighborhood for hours yesterday, searching for the cat, but it was futile. Because we live so close to a wildlife reserve* we were afraid she'd been eaten by something.

This morning the rest of the family came over and we opened our presents. My mum got up from the couch and walked around to grab some more coffee, and all of the sudden she drops down and squeals "KITTY!"

Silly cat just wandered in through the doggy door like nothing had happened.

* Before anyone says the obvious, I'm all for keeping the cat inside 24/7. The rest of the family, unfortunately, isn't. :/

While certain dog breeds may be happy staying inside all day, I am fairly sure cats are not.

The whole family played a huge game of monopoly yesterday! I was, of course, the top hat. I always win, because I cheat shamelessly.

I had a lovely Christmas! I got some nice clothes and a how to draw dragons book from my boyfriend! We had beef stew and it was very yummy. :D We also baked a ham for his family because their oven didn't work, so I hope they enjoyed it when they got home. I hope he liked the gifts I got him, too.

Unfortunately the things I baked this year didn't turn out right, especially the bundt cake, the thing stuck in the pan, and again when I remade it, even when coating it with oil and flour. Ah well, till next Christmas!

All the advice I've heard on the subject recommends keeping cats indoors for their own safety, and I think some shelters in my county will actually refuse to adopt a cat out to a family who won't agree to keep it indoors, but it may vary from area to area.

And since I don't want to stray off-topic....

Christmas was a pretty quiet affair at my house today, kitty fiasco aside. After we opened our presents everyone went their separate ways. I got [almost] everything I asked for: new headphones to replace my broken ones, a really nice microphone so I can muck around with my friends on the Turnabout Musical project, a few gift cards and a nice sum of money for Boxing Day shopping.

The only thing I didn't get was a specific DS game, and that wasn't intentional. I got a DS game, and I was so excited to see Professor Layton on the cover I tore off the cellophane wrapping before I realized that it was a copy of the PL game I already owned. Whoops. :$ If I can't trade it in for the other PL game tomorrow I'm going to try to sell it for some cash to put towards the other game.

non-spayed/neutered cats do like to roam, but Officer's totally right. After having literally all of my childhood kitties mauled by raccoons/eaten by coyotes/hit by cars/died of diseases caught from strays, I can vouch for how extremely important it is, regardless of whether we're talking about an urban/rural setting. I've known people who feel otherwise, but these people usually don't know much about cats, eg. think you can dump a housecat outside and it can magically take care of itself. So not true.

My mom actually joked about getting me a kitten for Christmas. I kind of wish it had been true (although it obviously couldn't happen, our landlord has a strict no-pets policy). :\

That reminds me, I actually got new earphones, too. Which is really nice, because my old pair is so worn out the rubber parts and foam covers have totally disintegrated. They still sound fine, so I won't be tossing them out any time soon, but it's nice to have a new set. I think I was overdue.

Quickly on the subject of cats:
In UK this doesnt seem to be an issue. Unless you live near a busy road there's almost nothing that can really harm at cat in your neighbourhood, aside from other cats, perhaps. And they're unlikely to do any real harm. Also, as Ghost mentioned, neutered/female cats dont really roam much, they're unlikely to develop a territory bigger than your garden anyway.

ANYWAYXMAS.

My dad and I somehow managed to get horrific food poisoning from our Christmas dinner last night. Our *vegetarian* christmas dinner. Which was pretty much all veggies and a nutroast. There is nothing IN that which can give you food poisoning. *sulk*
I notice that it was the two atheists who got the food poisoning, not the agnostic or somewhat-christian. Hmmmm....

I hope you're feeling better now, Lucy! You're not alone, 'illmas' has come for me this year too. Hello, flu. :P

I feel bad though, because my boyfriend was round yesterday, for our 'Christmas II', but I felt so ill that all I could do was mostly sleep. :( We still had a nice dinner, exchanged presents, and he took me on a walk along the seafront, in an attempt to help me perk up, but I still worry that he was bored and that I wasn't much fun!

Illness aside, how was everyone else's Boxing Day? :)
