shout out to all the pears

They aren't causing issues, but it's a peculiar sight to come across when you're looking around the world.

Interesting.

That's C2toDS judging by the mycelium. And unless I'm mistaken, it happens because of how DS handles the creation of new objects and the mvsf command. Pears are actually trying to grow beneath that point, in the caves below. The seeds get stuck up against the cave wall, but the plant itself (when the seeds sprout) is much larger and it can't grow inside a wall, so the game moves them to the nearest safe location, which as far as it can guess is right up there. Thus, you get a huge patch of pears.
It can be somewhat problematic because the population controls in the seeds do not look up there for pears before growing, and pear plants themselves don't look around to know if they should continue to grow. The seeds are in the tunnels below, and they're looking in the tunnels for pears, with no idea that the plant they're about to sprout will end up getting teleported to the tunnels above. So you get this overpopulation in a distinct patch.
Are these pears causing any performance issues as far as you can tell?

I've not seen this happen myself in C2, but if I were to guess, it's because there is a room boundary directly to the left of those plants. Any seeds that land beyond that point die because they've entered a non-fertile room, whilst seeds that land just inside the boundary can grow because it's fertile there. It still seems strange, though. If my theory is correct, then why aren't any plants growing to the right of that spot? (In my games they have had no trouble populating across that room)

Is that C2 or C2toDS?
