Hello, my timing is horrible so I'm always on when no one else is around, so I thought I'd post here.

I'm trying to make Drider grendels. Half grendel, half spider, all awesome.
However it's been a while since I last made a breed and I usually worked on norns, so aside from making the sprites, I'm having a bit of difficulty.

I'm currently trying to figure out the Att for the adult males. Affixing the hip went well enough, but the rest of the leg isn't agreeing with it. Guess that's gonna be more math then I remembered.

I've never been into genetics since I'm more the visual type, so I don't know what could set them aside on that front?

I'm just trying to make something cool. :)

Thinking of genetics, what species of spiders would you like to model their behaviour on? Tarantulas are mostly solitary ambush predators.

Spider mating behaviour is very interesting but I think it would be too complicated to implement. Female spiders are infamous for cannibalising their mates. I think a custom egg sprite of a silk egg sac would be fitting.

There's a few social spiders living in colonies.

Female spiders usually live longer and are bigger than their male counterparts.
Since spiders are known to be commonly venomous, give them resistance to glycotoxin. IDK maybe their hits inject glycotoxin into their victim (if said victim is a creature). I think adding a venom sac would mess up cross-breeding compatibility.

This isn't possible with genetics alone, but everything else should be. It would be interesting to see a breed where the males and females have different lifespans.

As for the .atts, when I did them manually I just opened each sprite image in paint, then used the .att files as coordinates to map the connection points. It's slow and tedious and not really recommended when better methods exist, but there's no maths required.

Thank you for the advice on atts Dragoler, and for the link cyborg, I'll have a look at the editor later to see if my brain can wrap around it.

As for the spider species, I don't really know all that much about spiders, and I based the spider part off of the grendels themselves visually, so I think anything goes really so long as a gene-engineer can step in. :)

I don't know about making the males smaller for now, but I figure I could probably achieve that by having their size cap-out at teenagers? For a dramatic difference, they would have to stay baby sized their whole lives.

Update: I think I worked out the Atts for the adult male, they seem able to walk properly now.

Note: Forgot to test them in elevators.

I cleaned up my spider body sprites and resized them to all 3 life stage sizes (old age uses the same size as adult age) and I think I worked out the att for the walk cycle of all 3 stages, tho i will need to test it properly to be sure.

Next step is making the facing camera / facing away from camera sprites i forgot to make, then clean those and resize them for each life stage.

Despite a few set backs from my attention span falling off, I think this is progressing very well. :)


NOTE: I dragged an adult into an elevator and he seem able to ride it just fine, so I assume the other life stages should as well (hopefully)

UPDATE: I believe I'm done with the sprites and Atts. Now I just need to find someone who can do the genetics for these little spidery guys. :)
