I don't know how this happened, but the 'engine.exe' file for Creatures 3 has just vanished! I've checked my anti-virus software, and it's empty of any 'suspicious' files. I've tried a file recovery program I was recommended called Recuva, which failed to find the file. I've searched the whole C: drive to no avail. I've checked the recycle bin. Nothing. The file seems to have completely disappeared.
The worst part is, I've only just realised it's gone. I last played C3 on the 6th of this month, so it could've disappeared within the last week or so, and I could've only just found out now.
Has this happened to anyone else?
For the record, this is the disc version of C3, running (or not, as the case may be) on a Windows 8.1 laptop.

Very strange. Is there any chance you could have accidentally renamed the file?
Best thing to do (if engine.exe doesn't turn up) would be to back up your game directory, reinstall, and hope it doesn't happen again. |

Since the initial post, I had not been able to resolve the situation by other means, and reinstalled the game last Sunday. I haven't yet added the backed-up files, but I'm running a test world to make sure everything's OK before I go all-in again. I didn't think there'd have been a fix beyond what had been suggested to me already, but I thought I'd ask just in case, so thank you for your response.
I never figured out what had happened; my best guess is my anti-virus may have gotten over-zealous and deleted it (a couple of years ago, it had previously put an '.exe' file for another game in its virus 'quarantine'). As you say, now I'm just hoping it won't happen again (I've changed the settings so it should now ask me before doing anything with any such files).
