Getting Sea Monkeys to Work?

Hey everyone. It's been a hot minute since I have been on the forums (since 2016 actually). I've been on a bit of a Creatures binge again lately, so I thought it was time I returned.

Anyways, I recently re-bought The Amazing Virtual Sea Monkeys by Creatures Labs for a future project I plan on doing. I installed it and everything seems to be in order. However, when I go to start the game, nothing happens. I troubleshooted the problem and it supposedly fixed any compatibility issues. But I still can't seem to get it to come up. Everything works fine right until I click play, and then it just won't start. No error messages or anything. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

For clarification, I have a HP laptop with Windows 10. I know this technically isn't Creatures related, but I thought maybe someone here could help.

Perhaps not technically Creatures-related, but considering how similar the engine is to those of the newer Creatures games, you have a better chance of getting help here than anywhere else. I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions myself.

Edit: There's probably an error log somewhere. Even if there were no visible errors at the time, there might be something in the log. Worth a look. They're usually found in the game's root directory under an obvious name.

I'm no windows user, but I remember reading similar issues about DS or something:

stick it in a Windows XP virtual machine? Creatures Village was made around the same time iirc and i couldn't play it either, though the game actually spat out an error message for me

On Windows 10 the game should run fine in administrator mode with no specific compatibility settings if you run it directly from engine.exe instead of the launcher. You might have some low FPS though, I don't remember if the game was like that on older OSes or not but it it can slow down significantly in some parts of the marina.

Sorry for the late response, but thank you all for the suggestions. I did try to run the game directly from the engine rather than the launcher, but I got the same problem. The spinning icon appears beside the cursor for a few seconds, and then it disappears. No error message, no error log.

I'm going to assume that something is going on behind the scenes that is preventing it from loading. I have no idea what it could be though. If I can get a Windows XP virtual machine up and running, like FlyingEttiNorn suggested, then i'll see if that fixes the problem. I'll update again once I solve the problem.

I debated if I was even going to reply to this, given that the thread is over two years old (I put this issue on the backburner for quite a while). But I did say I would update when I found a solution. Sooooo here we are lol.

I never got the game to work natively on my Windows 10 laptop. So I took FlyingEttiNorn's advice and got a virtual machine that runs Windows XP around a week ago. Today I used a Sea Monkey ISO file and got the game installed and running perfectly! Couldn't be happier with how it turned out.

I would still like to get it running without the machine eventually, but i'll test some other options later. Thanks to everyone for responding! [ngrin]

That's strange. I got my ISO from the Internet Archive. Granted, it wouldn't install just by clicking the icon on My Computer. I had to actually open it, then go directly to the Install_SM file. THEN it brought up the usual install splash and would install normally. Had to do the Direct X installation too.

Otherwise it ran fine. So i'm not sure what the issue might be.

Interestingly, on my Arch Linux PC, Sea Monkeys works perfectly with Wine! I didn't even need to install DirectX 8. :o
