Look at these two images:

And then there's grendels:

Where did the rest of the body go? It looks like there's no body, just a head with limbs attached to it.

The sprite laying system for backward facing sprites works fine for norns and ettins but it fails grendels. Is there anyway to patch this issue? Cos or something?

Nope, that's just the layering. The Body is always behind the head(otherwise you'd see the little neck norns have), and it's an engine thing, so you can't fix it with cos or anything, you'd have to modify the engine itself.
You know...wait...nevermind... wait...no...umm...maybe later... |
