Strangeo Forum SOPA    Gumbo      11/17/2011 I'm not sure this belongs here, but have you guys heard abut this? This is relevant to all you who live in the US. SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act, basicially give the US government the power to blacklist any IP adresses that infringe on any copyright material. this includes Youtube, Tumblr, Facebook, etc., and maybe even this site. For more info, click here. What do you guys think about this? Put politely, a horrific blight on freedom of speech that should be dealt with by having it's creators rounded up and forced to read my immortal until their microscopic brains explode. I can't put it accurately as I'd be banhammered from Ccaves and anyway the swearword filter would probably block the post. What does it mean for the CC? Nothing good. Basically, if we ever post something copyrighted like say "Norn™" just a word mind you, they shut down the site that posted it. Our only hope is to protest it strongly, and if it passes for our American members to either stage a political revolution or move to Canada.   Officer-1BDI     11/17/2011 News of this bill (and the related "Protect IP Act" ) was spreading like wildfire on Tumblr last night. I ended up signing two petitions requesting Congress to stop its passage, though who knows what good that'll do. FWIW Pelosi (House Minority Leader in the 'States) and several other representatives/senators are speaking out against the bill, which I take as an encouraging sign. You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. But basicly the same like the german GEMA wich is banning videos from Youtube when there could be content in it that is copyrighted. But what did you expect from a nation, where they once almost set the value of pi to 4 by law? We've always had Gameware's blessing to create third-party content and such, so how would this bill censor the CC?   AquaShee   11/18/2011 Actually, I don't think Sam999 understands, Laura. The word 'Norn' isn't even fully copyrighted as it is part of Norse Mythology. Norns themselves probably are copyrighted, but their name isn't. Plus if you think you're not going to be allowed to use a product's name to refer to it, well... That's a bit of a silly thought pattern. While this bill isn't a good thing and the power creep of the governments (not just the USA one) is scary and ought to be opposed so a proper system can be worked out, it'll hardly affect the CC. YouTube, Google, Facebook and other large websites where the content is provided by the users will be the ones in 'trouble', and they have legal teams to defend themselves. Noone is going to even bother shutting down a tiny website like this one, at most we'll get a stern letter if we start hosting pirated versions of the games and will have to take them down. Seriously Sam999, if you're going to overreact like this please do it somewhere else. "My Immortal" is a better read than the drivel you usually spout when the topic is somewhat controversial. And yes, I have read "My Immortal". So please inform yourself on the actual situation and its actual consequences before going into a crazy fanboy rage that makes everyone here look bad.
