I know AquaShee has, but has anybody else heard of Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale?

Somebody else wrote:
(Because I won't do it justice! :P)

Poor Recette Lemongrass. A completely ordinary little girl in a generic fantasy world, living an ordinary little fantasy girl life. Until her dad says he's off to become a great hero, and leaves. Three months later, there's no sign of him.

Now there's a fairy on the doorstep, saying that she works for the investment agency that dad used to fund his move into the hero business, and is there to claim on the loan. Being a little girl and barely having enough money to feed herself, Recette has two options - lose her house, or start a shop. So, a fairy Godfather, one might say.

One offer she can't refuse later, and Recette, with the help of the loan-shark fairy, Tear, are opening a generic RPG equipment shop, ready to help prepare the local adventurer population with all the swords, armor and healing potions they need! You go into town, buy stock from the crafters guilds, stock your shelves (putting your best items on display in front of the window) and wait for customers to roll in. Then you haggle for price and try to turn a solid profit.

So far, so simple. Problem is that each week, you've got an increasingly large debt repayment to fill the cheque for. Oh, and the fact that you really can't get good gear wholesale. As anyone who has ever played a dungeon crawl before knows, you get magic swords by beating up monsters. Unfortunately, Recette and Tear probably amount to about 80 pounds between them, so aren't going to be able to do any fighting. This is where the Adventurer's Guild comes in.

Hire an adventurer with some of your money, and have them take you into the dungeon. This is where the game turns into a simple but fairly tough and addictive dungeon crawler. Loan out some of your stock to make your adventurer tougher, and then go blat monsters and steal their stuff. Once you've got enough loot to fill your bags, escape back to the surface and try to sell your spoils - ideally to the same adventurer you plan on hiring next time, meaning that they'll be better equipped. It's a grand circle of heroic violence.

It gets more complex as you play further. As your level (as a merchant) goes up, you gain the ability to buy second-hand goods off your customers, or the ability to reccomend stock from the back-room to customers wanting something specific. There's lots more abilities, but those are in the full game. Later on, you even have to worry about the kind of decor your store has, and what kind of customers you're attracting.

Taken from here.

(Sorry, it's only for Windows. :()

I started playing this yesterday and have found it to be very addictive so far - I like it very much, so much so that I bought it off Steam after being glued to the demo for about five hours. It would be great if some of you checked it out; we could have a good chat about it. :)

Well, there's also a Steam version for Mac - so it may be compatible with Mac. :)

Thanks for sharing, I've never played MMORPGs. But this seems to be like a Tycoon/Diner Dash game. So I may get addicted, too. :P

I don't see a Mac version on Steam, so investigate carefully before you buy, Mac users.

I don't see what MMORPGs have to do wth this, though. :/ It's based on standard Japanese RPGs like Dragon Quest and similar.

Also, it's not a Diner Dash-style game at all. Diner Dash has races against the timer to serve costumers. Recettear is about carefully managing your time to buy stock, sell your stock at good prices and go dungeon-diving for more and rarer stock.

As for Tycoon... Running a small item shop is hardly Tycooning, really.

Try the Demo, you'll love it! I recently beat the main storyline (paying of a huge loan) but there's still lots of dungeons to discover, bosses to beat and items to sell!

This!

The demo is rather lengthy, so it really gives you a great taster of the game. By the end of it, you'll more than likely want more and want to buy it, if you've enjoyed it. Like I mentioned, I was glued to the demo for five hours before I bought the full version, and now I'm glued to that. Hopelessly. :P

The awesome thing about the full version is, when you can't meet a payment deadline, you lose, but losing is not the end! You get a Game Over screen and then you 'wake up from a dream' on Day 2 and get to try again. When this happens, you’re back to having just 1,000 pix (currency), but you still get to retain all of the items you've collected previously, your Merchant level and your adventurer(s?) get to keep their Adventure level.

This definitely makes things easier the next time around (the game calls each try a 'Loop') and in turn you get to try different strategies and improve your gameplay.

Ah sorry, it was a quick look and I thought it was a multiplayer online RPG where you must serve your customers on time in your own shop you are managing (tycooning).

There is a special Mac section at the website of Steam. But even if the platform is ported, the game may not be compatible at all. :)

Recettear isn't in the Mac section, though. The creators said they wouldn't make a Mac or Linux version since there wouldn't be enough interest.

The Mac version of Steam doesn't mean that Steam games also run on a Mac, it just means that Steam also has Mac games available for purchase.

Heh this is a great game. I haven't bought it yet due to it being outside of my current budget but I'll buy it eventually.

Still, I'd recommend anybody who hasn't played, to give this a shot.
