Is EyePet, the PS3 exclusive pet game by any chance using some actual brain processes or is just as much complicated as The Sims? |

I doubt it. Creating a complex virtual brain for something like EyePet would be a huge waste of time and resources both to develop and run it.
They'll get much better results just using a pre-programmed brain with a few tables for possible situations, actions, personality traits and how much it likes stuff based on past experiences.

Most oblivious people believe Creatures failed because of the brain. Similarly, most people (Fox included) believe that Futurama failed because the robots had computers, so when Fox made Robots they made everything clockwork in order to make it "user-friendly", at least that's my interpretation.
And 1BDI, if you're reading this, I think we've been enemies long enough.

Wiimeiser, I don't consider you an enemy, but I'm still not comfortable talking with you. And this really isn't a matter that warrants hijacking a thread about EyePet for. :/
Regarding the Futurama comparison, I'm not sure what you mean. There's never been an official reason for the cancellation of the show besides its ratings (which have largely been attributed to the lack of advertising and the lousy timeslot FOX offered), and to my knowledge none of the theories regarding why FOX did what it did involve the workings of the robots on the show.
Back to the OP, though, I haven't been keeping up with EyePets, but my guess is it isn't that much more complicated than The Sims in terms of AI.
You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there.

Wiimeiser, why the sudden comment about Creatures and Futurama? This thread is about EyePet.

What I was basically trying to get at was that Eyepet doesn't have a brain because of the complexity involved... Wow, I even confused myself.

As we seem to be having trouble getting back on topic here, I'm gonna ask: What is the EyePet like? Are there any similarities to Creatures at all, or is it just a generic virtual pet game? |

It probably is just a generic pet game using camera motion sensors and all.
But i saw some small similiarities to creatures. The EyePet looks quite like a norn (and has a similiar retarded smile :O), it hatches from an egg and it is called by every teenager a "$W33T CuT3 M0nKeY!!!!". Other than that, it just feels heavily inspired by the Creatures series. However it is nowhere said anything about the creatures' AI, only that: "An incredibly lifelike little critter, EyePet gives you all the lovable benefits and interaction of a real-life pet without tearing up your sofa or making a mess on the rug." There is also a lot of stuff about customization, the graphics (OH BOW, BEFORE THE MIGHT POWER OF THE PS3) and that it's cute.
The main reason i asked is that i love watching complex AI and artifical life in action, and i have a PS3 myself, so i thought i could get it. |

Judging from the videos I've watched, I have a feeling it's more of an "emergent behavior" type pet, like Petz. Although I don't have a PS3, so I can't check for myself.
But I think if they had given it a complex AI they would have mentioned it in their advertisements--given the effort involved to implement something like that, I can't see why would they overlook it.
It still seems pretty cute though.

It's just a lot easier to write an AI that acts just like a lovable monkey, than to write a complex brain with neurons and learning behaviour and all that and hope it'll end up acting like a lovable monkey.
