I'm working with my mother trying to help her get her business going, and one of the things she asked me to do was to make some Flash games for her. She was impressed when I told her about the critters in Creatures, so I tried to see if I could program something similar in Flash. The result of my first test is a Chao game.
The Chao walks around, sleeps, sings, etc. and can be fed, petted, or even abused. It will behave differently depending on how it is treated, from begging for attention to making nasty faces when it thinks you aren't looking. This is basically a beta, but I thought people might get a kick out of it all the same.
You can play it here.

How cute, but my chao died.
edit: I tried again, and my Chao turned into a Dark Chao.

This is cool
How does it work?
And when I punished my chao it cried for ages, is that meant to happen?

And maybe a bit more animated? When I reward or punish it, it always flickers for a moment into a different pose and then becomes normal again but it doesn't look good if you know what I mean.

How does the chao work? Is it scripted?

Should be fixed now.
Papriko: like I said, it's still just a beta. Until I get to the point where I can render my own sprites, I have to rely on the sprite sheets that are already out there. Few Chao sprite sheets offer really smooth animation sequences.
Scoota: yeah, it's all done using Actionscript.

Aww, that's really really cute!
I loved the Chao garden in Sonic Adventures 2: Battle. Will you add moe possible Chao forms? I want a flying Chao, and Chao races!

I tried to make mine get fat. It looked like it was getting fat for a bit, but then it just turned into a drop of pure fat and died |

Thanks you guys!
I plan on rendering the final graphics in Blender. I'd like to have all the ability types but will probably skip the different alignments and only use Neutral Chao. But I do intend to have Chao races. How can you have Chao and not race them?
The finished version will also be connected to a database allowing people to log in and save their Chao.
I'd like it to be possible to keep multiple Chao in the same garden at a time. Not sure if I can do that and draw info from the database, though. I'll have to see.

Aww, but I really like the pixel graphics! They're so cute and pixely.
Would be nice if the player could control the chao while racing, so it'd be like a platformer game with stats for swimming, running, climbing and flying.

I like the pixel sprites too. Using them would definitely be easier, since I wouldn't have to make new models for each Chao type. Maybe I should do that.
I have been playing with a real basic platform for Flash that could be used for a Chao race game. It has variables like jump height and running speed which could easily be adjusted to reflect a Chao's specific stats.

Personally I think Chao should not be able to jump very high at all. Instead of jumping they should flap their wings. The better their flying ability, the faster they can flap and the slower they'll fall until they can flap fast enough to take off.
Non-flying Chao will just have to use their strength to scale walls. Just like in the games.

Yesh, I got intertubes back.
Well, I got a hero chao, finally, after ten or so deaths, I got one!
EDIT: I got a chaos chao! I've gotten all three types! I've also done an awesome thing, I cheated death!

I'm curious, how did you cheat?
Sorry scoota, but Chao are more like Pokemon, you increase their stats to make them evolve and (hopefully) win races, but there isn't much more to them.
That's part of why I chose to make a Chao game--the programming in the official games is transparent enough that I already had a decent idea on how I might program one.

Ok!
But how do you make them evolve? And to cheat death just feed them while they are dying...

Whenever it's about to die, I feed it foods that increase health (really fast), when it's in that final stage.
My chaos chao has had the longest life.
Feeding candy reduces life span.
I think the hero chao should be able to breed the animals, and the evil chao should be able to eat them.
EDIT: LOL you forgot!
Don't fix it, it's making us happy, just allow it to continue, or maybe make it to where only evolved chaos can do it.
My chao went to the white cacoon, and then was revived. It's the anti christ chao! (Get it, jesus died, came back, LOL)
EDIT2: I don't think it can die anymore 0.o
EDIT3: The death screen showed (fed candy*), and it's still making noises! It made the hey whoo noise, the sleeping noise, and now it's crying!

I've noticed that with the health bar.
They do sometimes come out normal. It's only certain things which will make them change, or if you can keep them alive long enough.

Oh, Ghosthande, that Chao that is the cutest thing I've seen all morning. It would be so easy to get addicted to playing something like this, especially if Chao Racing was added. |

I have to say bugtesting Chao is much less tedious than bugtesting most other kinds of programming.

Certainly.
Although it may be a while until anything significant happens, as I'm working on applying what I have here to other projects (the ones she asked me to do)... so this has become more of a side project. She can't have Chao on her business site, after all. I definitely still intend to continue it, though, no doubt about that.
