Creatures Online in Hibernation Laura | 11/2/2015 | | Today we've learned the disappointing (but maybe unsurprising to some) news that development on Creatures Online has been suspended due to a lack of funding. The original source of this announcement can be found on the French website, Pockett Videogames, but here's a rough translation:
Originally released in 1996, Creatures is an artificial life program by Steve Grand, who worked for Millennium Interactive at the time. It was followed by Creatures 2 in 1998, and Creatures 3 in 1999. These games had marked many players. After a long wait, we were expecting much from Creatures Online by Fishing Cactus (development team) and ProSieben Games and Bigben Interactive (publishers). The project continued to move in April, but according to our information, development is now on standby due to lack of funding. However, various companies continue to announce and mention Creatures Online on their respective websites. The game was announced on iPhone/iPad, Android and PC/Mac. Hopefully a solution will be found!
So, what's next for Creatures Online? Come and discuss your theories and thoughts on this latest development in the forums! |

Looking at some things about Creatures Online, It does seem to have some very innovative new features. If it comes out, it looks quite interesting. Sorry about the hasty comment everyone.....

Dude this sucks. Be waiting a long time. Aye. I second the source code being under open source. People on the old Gameware Development forums wanted to do their own game.
We would have a Creature 4 right now made by the fans if that was so. Creatures Online might have been Creatures 5 or perhaps 6.

I wish the C3/DS source code and assets were released under an open-source license. That would IMO be a far greater boon to Creatures than Creatures Online would have been.

@Jesseth
I suppose so. Maybe they aren't so bad. We'll see what it's like when it comes out.

@Ilovegrendels
afterburner climax may not be a game you personally super like, but before we drop the topic, I just wanted to say that it's a game series that they picked up after it had been long dead- Just like the creatures games!
It looks like they did a good job of revamping that retro game too! In fact, afterburner is a bit of an old classic. To the point that in the famously successful Bayonetta games, there's a whole level dedicated JUST to referencing Afterburner.
So ironically, the fact that they successfully released an afterburner title that looks pretty polished actually lends credence to the fact that they clearly loved bringing life to old abandoned game series with cult/leftover followings... Like us!
In fact, even if they don't end up making CO, at least it seems like they may be able to help more old titles in future. <3

I think Ilovegrendels has already understood that her comment was very hasty, so we can drop it now. The point has been made enough.

I think your comment about them going bankrupt was very harsh and mean-spirited. Don't forget these are actual people with actual jobs, and maybe even families to support.

You're all welcome to your opinions. Ilove, you know I feel Creatures 4 is not going to be anything like the rest of the series if it ever comes out, but I still think you should give them the benefit of the doubt. That Epistory thing did look nice.

I just don't think their kind of game is good.

Most of FC's catalog seems to be adaptations of existing games to handheld. They very much bit off more than they could chew with Creatures, but kudos for them for trying even when they realized they coudn't do it in one year like they thought, and it turned into a huge project.
