They are absolutely cute as the dickens! [nblush]

I activated the Hummingbird default COB (COB that comes with the game) for the first time. It's neat. It's an aesthetic COB that implements Hummingbirds into the game. They nest in the surrounding trees, and gather the materials for their nests from grass. Cool stuff. [nsunglasses]

Here is a picture of the Improved Akamai Norns getting used to their new surroundings. As babies, they highly enjoy the presence of the Hummingbirds, and sometimes chase them around.

In fact, one of the Norns got really angry that he could not 'eat' the Hummingbirds. [nlaugh]

[nscared] Oh geez. Someone pray for the poor Ettin that wandered into literally the deadliest place in Albia save the ocean. Heavy Metal Poisoning ho!

As expected, these Norns are good at taking care of their needs. They're almost always happy (Save for the occasional rainstorm that [nquestion] seems [nquestion] to actually keep waking one of the Norns up when he tries to rest).

I brought them lots of toys. In particular, I saw a mess of them kicking a ball around the group similar to that gym game where you try to keep a beach ball from hitting the ground. Absolutely unsequenced, and wonderful. What makes me so happy about Creatures 2 is that much of the strange things that occur are unscripted. Undoubtedly, this behavior is probably due to the fact that Akamai Canny Norn babies are really curious, and like playing with any toy in sight.

Side observation: The "Chronicles" applet has one of the coolest art pieces I've seen in Creatures 2. It's one of those "a picture can tell a million stories" kind of deals. I think this picture in wallpaper quality would make my day. Alas, it's tiny. I might commission an artist to try to recreate it for large monitors. I love this.

I've decided to use the "Chronicles" function as my Roll Call, as it is far more accurate than I could ever be. It also looks superb.

This Norn, Argar, sat here for about an entire minute (literal time) pressing up and down on this elevator caller. His boredom did not decrease at all, so I guess elevator music really is boring. [nsmirk]

Hmm. Surprisingly, the family of Norns are congregating at the Island of Love's eastern side. This is strange, as nearly every other Wolfling Run I've had has ensured they group together at the west side of the volcano. The Kannova Venterra Norns did the same thing. One thing I wonder (to any privy Creatures 2 techies in particular) is, what exactly makes the Island of Love such a hot spot for Norns? Most of my runs take place here, rather than at the Ettin Temple or the Yggdrasil Tree.

About half of my wolflings (why is there an extra l??) ended up there, too, but I also had desert island bananas and other goodies.

With the bridges installed, I think that area is void of distractions that would be bad/frustrating for Norn survival - no cliff edges, lifts, buttons, bugs/badbugs...there are also few clouds there if I recall correctly. A rare instance of Norns actually making life easier for themselves :o

I wonder if it is also about warmth/light levels? I'm entirely unsure how much that affects Norn comfort (I've only just recently discovered there's more to them than cute sprites and bibble) and can't check the area with the ecology applet, but it must be a nice place to live! Maybe it has similar properties to the incubator room?

@Brynn

Maybe! I've also wondered if the "Island of Love" literally means the area is a place where Norns can breed better. If so, that would mean that there might be something drawing them to that spot. That's my hypothesis.

The Ecology Set says it (the Island of Love) is the lowest temperature area on the map (Contrary to the fact that it's literally next to a volcano. Tradewinds?). The light level there is exactly the same as everywhere else on the surface. Strange.

Wolfling is akin to "Wolf child" or "Of wolf". Wolfing implies nothing.

Nothing like slapping your 3-second-old Norn awake from sleep to introduce him to the hard life of Norns!

I'm not kidding. One of my Norns gives birth, and the father walks over to the precious sleeping child and slaps it twice until it wakes up. The father then praises it. What?????????

Norns.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
This is the very father that did that. He just walks around grabbing bees and slapping Norns with a smile on his face. He's super aggressive towards pretty much everything around him. Maybe he's the Richard (LFG) of this world; because he's a dick.

Here is the second born of this run. Her name is Bethany, and her sprite mix looks excellent (Earth toned Norns mix well).

Literally as I was typing about the second born Norn, a third was born. This is the second born of Argar, the mean Norn from before. He did not slap this child awake, instead choosing to slap his firstborn around.

Norn convoy.

Two Norns stealing the toy dog back and forth from each other in an epic battle. Spoiler alert: They dropped it into the ocean.

The fourth born child. This picture is significant for two reasons. 1. It showcases this weird sky error that I want to cover up all the time, and 2. Beryl, the small Norn, was the first 'birth' I saw. Creatures don't have a birth animation; they just kinda drop their young out of their stomachs. It's literally just a frame long, the child appears in the air and drops about half a foot down. Usually, the child is asleep.

Could it be that Ocean Bridges caused you to have the same bug as my recent playthrough? When going to the desert island, my Norns can go west ovr the western ocean, but when they try to go back east over the bridge they hit an invisible wall.

Sorry, no such luck (or unluck, as it were). They come and go as they please, however rare that may be. Sometimes they do wander back east.

The two Green Norns are just not into breeding at all. The Pixies and Brown Norns have both bred successful children; the Green ones not so much. I may use artificial insemination to ensure that the Green Norns are not doomed. Not yet, though. I might if things get more dire.

For readers that do not own Creatures 2, listen to this. The Creatures 2 soundtrack is absolutely amazing. Perfectly ambient for this game (The reason I suggest playing music over it is that it simply gets old. There are a lot of songs, but they will only play when the camera is panned over a certain area. For those who play in a certain area, the songs get old).

I feel so dirty. I artificially inseminated the female Green Norn with the male Green Norn's sperm. The result was this angel. I named him Beta, because that seems like a fairly technology-sounding artificial-ish name.

Weird. The sky glitch comes and goes as it pleases. Maybe it has something to do with the world wraparound? (The point where the world seems to wrap around itself is very close to this point.)

Actually... you're right.

Every anti-wallbonk Norn I've seen likes to go left, at least preferred to right.

Also, I really appreciate your respect of the running jokes in this series. Don't think I didn't see the 'norny' reference you made when you were talking to me about the genome [nsmirk]. Heheh.

How's the ground? Is it easy for them to leave that area? It could be that if they prefer 'righting' to 'lefting', that that area is just a comfortable place for them to stop and enjoy the masham berries.

Does the sky error happen more often when there are Norns around? Maybe it has to do with speech bubbles (I seem to remember that can happen due even with the hand, though not in that area in particular)

They don't really eat a lot of those, actually. There's a Meat Vine on the island, and they tend to stick around it.

All of my runs have the ocean path open to the Norns, yet the non-wallbonk-proofed Norns seem to end up on the right side of the map while the wallbonk-proofed Norns seem to end up on the left. They come and go sometimes, but they tend to congregate there quite often.

Those aren't coconuts? Oh. o-o

Thank you Malkin, Grendel_Man, and Venithil for your posts! The feedback is awesome, and it keeps me doing this stuff [ngrin].

I have no idea! It seems to not be related to the Norns' presence, as the Sky Glitch is sometimes there even with no Norns on the map. I'll keep on the lookout, but I'm not sure that it actually matters whether Norns are there or not. I'll try to observe.

Edit: It seems to be tied to me alt-tabbing out of Creatures 2. I notice it comes and goes as I alt-tab out and into Creatures 2 for extended periods of time.

It turns out that my artificial insemination was unneeded; one of the Green Norns interbred with a Brown, making this guy.

Take note that there are no "eggs" because I use the Live Birth COB. The amount of natural births simply has to be extrapolated from the Norns Dead and Norns Alive (This will be easier once every Generation A Norn is dead, as it will be for sure that they are part of the "Dead" category and thus are subtracted from the dead for the purposes of determining Natural Births. For instance, lets say that we have 20 alive Norns, 10 Dead Norns (Including the Gen1 Norns) and 6 Imported Norns. You would subtract 6 (Gen1 Norns) from 10 (Deaths), (4), and then add that 4 to the 20 alive Norns to determine that there were 24 Norns born naturally, based on that example).

We're at Generation C. I'm going to let the game run overnight so I can rest, and so the Norns can have fun in my absence.

Somehow, two Norns got stuck in the volcano with the Grendel. I retrieved them out, but did not treat their Heavy Metal Poisoning. The difference between Feral and Wolfling is that sometimes I may interact, and that was absolutely bizarre. They must have clipped down there.

In Norn world, it has been ages. All of the Gen1 Norns are dead, and the Gen2 Norns are old coots. Generation 3 and 4 are the youth now.

Hm... seems that the Casper thing wasn't that big of a mystery after all. Another Norn brought the Dog Toy over to him (The best Toy in the game, it makes a Norn completely not bored once it is activated), and he became happy once his boredom went down, even though originally he wasn't even bored.

Old Green Norns are incredibly cute. They look tired, but super happy, as if they're fulfilled in life. [nblush]

Senile Norns, however, are NOT good at taking care of their needs. Buck here wants to eat. How does he do this? He walks left of the Meat Vine, then right of the Meat Vine, then left again, before abandoning the prospect entirely. Remember, his main drive is hunger right now, and he doesn't want the free food in front of him.

Meanwhile, this oldie lost all concept support upon reaching senile status. Does anyone know what that means? Doesn't sound good...

This baby can't walk, and because none of the Norns are nice enough to bring it food, it will soon starve to death. Disability is punishable by death in the Norn world. Using the push command did work on getting him to move, however he collapsed in this ditch after walking aways. He doesn't move if he can help it.

(Extra note: He changed age categories between the two screenshots! He'll die a child [ncrying])

Officially, they're Masham Berries.

But everyone knows they are really coconuts.
Try getting Norn to say "Masham Berry", I dare you.

I should probably try to find breeds with other toxin resistances once I am fully done with my own. I originally only gave Nova Venterra resistance to heavy metals because A : The concept was born from my experiment with Subterras, and the Volcano is one of the few *subterranean* places in the world, and B : It stops the possibility of evolution and improvement if the Norns start out with everything, but I don't know how many breeds with select toxin resistance actually are there.

Casper is cute, but I wonder if he's just bad at figuring out what he wants or mutated his expressions somehow...

How long do these Norns live? Depending on when they die and/or reach Senile, it may turn out certain drops in efficiency and intelligence are almost unavoidable.

Each Norn lives to about 8 hours of age naturally before death. That's the majority, however not many live to be under 8 hours, and only a few live to be upwards of 12-14 hours old.

Well, intelligence break points for first version of K.V-s were 4:30, 6:15, and 8:00 roughly. After the 8:00 the Norns were respectively dumb like a sack of potatoes in case of the less smart Norn and basically "Welp, I'm done, back to being dumdumlevel" a.k.a close to regular OHSS for the smarter Norns. Now, inbetween Akamai Canny and further improvements, there's no way those Norns' brains would deteriorate quite so much, but 8 hours isn't a surprising breaking point for intelligence at all.

Man, I feel like I'm missing out sometimes in not playing Creatures 3. Metarooms sound awesome; but alas... there are very few interesting maps for Creatures 2; and the ones that do exist are pay-to-own.

[ncrying] Creatures 3 stahp.

One thing Creatures 2 has: The world of Albia is beautiful. Check out that jungle backdrop! Albia has desert, tropics, rainforest, and a vast subterran system, and it's beautiful. However... the 'vast subterran system' is incredibly DANGEROUS for Norns, meaning that the sense of wonderment is soon gone once you realize that Norns are stupid enough to get stuck in places with no food (Or worse, stuck staring at a Shee Statue). It's almost too complex for Norns.

That makes sense. The Norns in this run are incredibly smart and capable... however, once they start getting grey hair, they start becoming really dumb. OHSS... why do we still call it that when the syndrome applies to multiple hours...?

I see your point! Maybe all Norns suffer from a Norn version of Alzheimers once they grow old...

Here are two H-Generation ( Generation 8 ) Norns socializing. They like praising each other.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Speaking of the Norns, every head type except Brown Norn heads has been lost, from Pixies to Goldens to Forest. Apparently, early on, Brown Norns outbred the rest. There are still some body parts from all of the genomes running around, but the heads basically make all of the Norns look exactly the same. Booooooring. As well, there are too many to really observe a single Norn's activity; it's rather overwealming.

Overall, I notice that Improved Akamai Canny Norns don't really behave all that differently from the regular normal Akamai Canny Norns. They may have changes, but they aren't very easy to notice. With that said, I'm not sure if they're better than Akamai Canny Norns or not. I would assume that they are. They take care of their needs just as well as Akamai Canny Norns (Which is to say, amazingly).

I'm going to put up a couple of Strawpolls on two topics:

1. Should I make Wolfling Runs for Creatures Games other than Creatures 2? (Vote here)

2. Should I move on from the Improved Akamai Canny Norns now, or continue to watch them? (Vote here)

Any readers that could answer both would be an immense help! [ngrin] If you wish to comment on your vote as well, please fill free to elaborate.

Oh geez, all of the Norns looking exactly the same is exhausting. It's hard to care about individual Norns when they're all a clone army of each other in appearance.

Is the run still any sort of fun for you? That's the most important thing.

And yeah, it's a shame how difficult it is for Creatures 2 norns to develop different colors if you're using Norns with the same genome.

My suggestion would be to end it, or put a spin on it by opening the map entirely and putting 2-4 Norns of a different species with the Akamai brain construction in it.

Even with the alterations you've made it's still highly likely a lot of offspring will be viable, because most of the metabolism still works the same as in regular Norns and so does their brain.

Do they seem significantly happier than regular Akamai Cannies to you?

They seem just as happy as Akamai Canny Norns; not really any more or less, as discernible from the naked eye.

Akamai Canny Norns don't have many problems with wallbonking, and these Improved Anti-Wallbonkers do not either.

Alterations I've made? This is Grendel_Man's breed.

Overall, Grendel_Man's breed has some minor improvements that may make them a superior breed. But, the alterations aren't so obvious. My guess is, these guys are a little bit better than Akamai Canny Norns.

Oh, I somehow thought you already progressed to your own thing. Must be because I made that post late for my timezone.

Well, obviously I don't KNOW what Grendel Man did yet, but in general crosses between guys who have the same brain are relatively viable, so if you're lacking in colors and/or fun but with to continue my point still stands.

Well, from my personal experience with Norn intelligence vs Norn age, anything that rebalances or lessens the amount of reward and punishment chemicals is a good idea for longer-lived Norns. Though I personally struck against rewarding actions that are pointless much of the time (with the one that baffled me the most being rewarding norns for 'pull' action on ANYTHING when they are hungry).

Here lately, there are a lot of happy and/or angry Norns. I'm not sure why there are so many pissed off Norns, but this is the most angry population I've seen. There's almost always a Norn angry somewhere. Funny thing is, these guys don't slap as much as most other breeds I've seen (Valentine Norns were sadistic).

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

One thing that may make Grendel_Man happy is, I've come to a consensus. I've observed these Norns for awhile, and... they're happier than the Akamai Canny Norns on average. However, they are also angrier than Akamai Canny Norns (This may just be a side effect of a slaphappy Norn somewhere down the line that taught other Norns that kicking ass and chewing bubblegum was acceptable behavior). I personally feel that these guys more often than not average out to be happy; happier than Akamai Canny Norns. It's much rarer to see sad Norns. Now, remember: there is an intense amount of bias here. Just because I say they're better doesn't mean they're better; with these subtle changes it's harder to tell. However, at least with this group, I've noticed a great quality of life for Norns. Whatever the case may be, I personally feel that this is one of the greatest Creatures 2 breeds that I've had the pleasure of putting into a Wolfling Run. It was a good decision to use this breed as the basis for my Ivrogne Canny Norns.

SO MANY happy Norns! [ngrin]

Extra Note: The primary need of these Norns is boredom, rather than sleep, food, et cetera. A lot of bored (but happy) Norns.

Something I've been meaning to ask you, TheDrunkenNorn: have you ever played with Washu Norns? Seeing as you have observed so many of the "higher intelligence" genetic species, I was wondering where they stand on the pecking order. Not sure where they're available anymore, though.

For future runs:
Do you know if it's easy to swap the appearance of Norns? I would love to see your Ivrogne Cannies in a Wolfing Run, but maybe you should give some of them Dewa sprites so that you don't end up drowning in brown.

(I also like the Mimikry's sprites and would like to suggest them for variety, because they're bright orange and have pointy ears..but out of the box they have the 256 genome. yikes.)

I've never heard of Washu Norns. I'd love to see them, if you/I/Lost Download Detectives can find them!

Appearance is super easy to swap. The next Wolfling Run I'll do will have some varied sprites. It's a -bit- of a pain, as I need two applications to do it, but it's worth it in the long run. Problem is, I only RECENTLY learned how to sprite switch, so I haven't been doing it at all.

The Ivrogne Norns are up next. I'll be sure to give them lots of unique sprites, and I'll try to give them Mimickry, Dewa, Flora, and other sprites. Why it will be easy to do this for my Norns is that I have the .gen files for the Ivrogne (If you don't have the .gen file for a breed you want to change the color of, it almost isn't worth the hassle to bother with it in my opinion).
