Uncomfy Lore-ish Error Message (Click to enlarge)
Uncomfy Lore-ish Error Message   Screenshots   CosmiSynth | 11/11/2015  log in to like post  5

"The game can only load in ancient Shee DNA, from the time when they left Albia. Any other DNA won't work."

Um?? Would you like to explain this cryptic and suspicious bit of error message, game? Please? O-O

Haha nice catch, I never spotted the resemblance but it's there in the brow ridge!

Thank you, if you do find any it might also be worth getting a copy written down somewhere else before it goes the way of the dodo... would this site allow it?

Edit: Just saw your edit, will check that link out thanks!

@Dragoler

Aside from the Shee entry on the Creatures wiki (God I just realized that the C1 manual Shee literally looks like good 'ole Lone before he went bald for C3's loading screen), I know there are a few more mentions of Shee and other Creatures lore on the old Gameware site that are what provided the wiki page with its material plus a little extra if you want to dig. Unfortunately it's always kind of a pain locating the wayback machine variants of those pages, but I'll send 'em to you if I can find them. xux

EDIT: Oh doy, of course, Creatures Caves posted a news article on some of the Gameware site being moved and put back up. This might have some story-related tidbits here and there that you may find interesting!

I guess you could explain anything away as being in an alternate reality and it would make perfect sense within the lore. If I remember correctly, the Lone Shee isn't even sure that he is still is the same universe he began in! [nlaugh]

BTW, do you have any sources for reading material into Shee canon? I know about the docking station stories but I can't find sources for any of the other information.

@NimhsLab

No problem! Lore discussion tends to lead to walls of text, so I'm used to it, and it means you have more stuff to chew on. vuv

Now, I DID actually find an interesting discrepancy while reading through some of the Lone Shee stories last night.

"But that was where the problems started. Albia seemed to be deserted - not a trace of a single Shee anywhere. Norns, Grendels and Ettins were still running around the place but there was no sign of proper life forms. It appeared that a gigantic space ship had been constructed at some point and the planet evacuated."

This is from the first story when The Lone Shee pops out of his lab/s and goes to the surface. There were Ettins running around up there on their own that didn't come from him! Rest in pieces all potential C1 surface-world Ettins, however that came to be.

But ALSO while reading there are clear instances of him going to the same place while within a different timeline or dimension, like when he pops onto the Shee Ark one time and almost ends up in the piranha pool, but the next time lands in there and there are trout and Hardman Norns running around. Honestly, the whole "Shee evacuated Albia" thing might in itself BE an alternate universe scenario that The Master Shee found himself in.

Basically, anything could be an AU at this point, but that fact is fine by me. That plus the Shee's ability to play with their own genetics in ridiculous ways let's almost anything within Creatures game logic work when it comes to character backstory and design. [ngrin]

Sorry for the wall o text...

Now, noted, we don't know how long the shee flew, so c3 and c2 may very well happen at the same time, or centuries apart. The DNA from when the shee left, with which we are provided, may very well be absolutely ancient from a modern shee's perspective, and I have the feeling the lone shee time-traveled to arrive when he did.

NimhsLab | 11/12/2015  log in to like post

I'm under the impression that c2 occurs long after c3/ds and that c1 occurs directly after the main shee exodus, with viable eggs in the hatchery and the stove still on, and the ettins left behind in the underground laboratories which would be cracked open by the lone shee's voyage. C2 shows us a planet that has had a chance to recover, with ettins left to their own devices having made primitive shelters, and the grendels trapped by unfortunate mother position. A switch is flipped on and viable born eggs are made again, cue the hand. In c3 we are shown a fairly recently abandoned ship, but not as recently as c1. The pilot's seat has had a chance to get cold, essentially. The ark is running on reserves, starving and somewhat degraded, which the condition of the lower norn meso on the cappilata supports, what with the tuba and bramboo dispensers being broken, the bramboo seemingly by its contents. The ettins left behind probably haven't gotten brave enough to leave the labs yet on Albia, and they probably more closely resemble c3 ettins than c2. C3 norns, however, barely resemble those left behind on pre-eruption Albia, which could be explained by a change in trend towards the more rounded, in honor of their move to sphericus, and all the ark breeds retain the interest in natural themes, while the lone shee brought with him a more colourful breed reflecting his quirky nature.

@Dragoler

They probably do live a long time... especially if they might run on the same logic that norns do and literally code themselves to be functionally immortal. They did apparently perfect their genome before working on the wheel, after all! Darn shee.

Dragoler | 11/11/2015  log in to like post  1

No problem :P I suspect it is worded as such because the Ark and Capillata may have been abandoned for thousands of years (now there's a sad thought for you...)

We also don't know how long a Shee lives for, but I would guess they live for much MUCH longer than we do...

CosmiSynth | 11/11/2015  log in to like post

@Dragoler

Ah yeah, that old Magma norn story. That one always makes me sad )':

Jesseth pointed the tree bit out to me when we were chatting earlier too. Maybe the wording is just a touch awkward in the error message.

Hey though, that's okay. My Creatures series worldview was dramatically falling apart around me, so I'm glad it's settling back into place now, phew! Thank you for saving me from staying awake in a cold sweat tonight. ouo;

Dragoler | 11/11/2015  log in to like post

He could have invented Ettins before they left... but you are right, not nearly enough evidence :P Though I still think it makes sense that the Ettins would not be around on the surface in C1 because they have all been ordered to help the Lone Shee.

As interesting a theory as yours is I think the Magma story still contradicts a lot of it. It mentions the old C1 island and explains how he feels bad for blowing it up. It also mentions the big tree in the C1 garden but when he goes back to Albia it is charred and dead.
