It's already July, and aside from NornBreeder offering to make a banner and graphics, I haven't seen any planning going on. (If I've just missed the planning somehow, please link me to it!)

So, I went ahead and made a survey to at least get us started. It will stay open through August 6, and you can click here to take it.

For those who might not know, the CCSF is the Creatures Community Spirit Festival, a traditional event held by the community each year. During the CCSF, downloads, art, and articles are posted daily, and other events go on, such as community wolfling runs or contests. It's basically a long party, meant to drum up excitement and love for these games and inspire people to participate in the community.

(Please link this survey elsewhere, as well - it'd be nice to get opinions from as many community members as possible.)

Thanks - I tried to take some cues from past surveys and responses to those surveys (as well as other feedback I remembered seeing) to put together something that would be helpful for the eventual organizers.

And thanks to those who have responded so far - there are some thoughtful answers in there, and I tweaked the wording of the last question to make it more clear.

I really really want to participate this year! I'm hoping to do at least one agent and maybe even release some finished Dragon Norns.

What will TheDrunkenNorn do for this upcoming spirit festival?

Same thing he does EVERY spirit festival,

Try to take over the WORLD! Update his Wolfling run!

You can find that here, fyi. It has my heart and soul in it, and it is the only major trace I can leave of content. Also, I make wallpapers. For the run. I guess that counts too.

Oh also I've only been here for a month so I don't really know anything of the events here. Eek.

Edit: @SpaceShipRat I love your post banner, I'd like a similar one for my posts for my Wolfling Runs. Do you know how I could do that/ask someone to help me do that? :) Thank you.

That's not a post banner, it's an advertisement for a game. :p The game made it. You'd have to make something in GIMP. It's just art from the game plus a logo someone drew with a colorful background.

I'm looking forward to the Spirit Festival. It'll be the first one I've ever been present for! I've known about them for years, but I've never been part of the community to see what one is actually like.

Hopefully I can take part and do some fun activities!

Thanks, NornBreeder, and good to know you're still up for making graphics.

Lurhstaap, I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

FaerieHawk, I hope you have fun! There's lots of good ideas in this survey so far on how to make this a great CCSF.

Almost anything, TheDrunkenNorn :) You can:
•Make a COB or agent or a new breed.
•Send in a sample of creatures that other people can use to widen their gene pools. •Do some art.
•Run a wolfling run (you're good at doing this), maybe stream it or invite people to name creatures.
•Write something - an article, a how-to, a poem, a story, an ode to your favorite game or metaroom.
•Run a contest.
•Do some wiki edits.
•Comment on things other people are doing for the CCSF.
•Make up some coloring pages for people to use or wallpapers or icons.
•We've even had people contribute music before.

This is a non-exhaustive list, of course.

Oh, nice, stuff like that didn't even occur to me. That's inspiring. I was planning to put out an agent or two if at all possible along with some genetic breeds, but I'll have to consider some more artistic stuff too.

TDN, I'd love to see some more successful Norns from your wolfling runs.

The next one is going to be using Akamai-Canny Breed type Norns, so I'm hopefully going to release some Z Generation Norns. :) Hopefully it will work because they don't suck like Nova Subterra ones do. Think I should try and do that?

Seriously, check the run, yesterday I hatched 10 Nova Subterra Norns, and yesterday they all died.

I don't know, I can't think of anything other than making stupid 5 second photoshop wallpapers and crying/making Wolfling Runs for C2...

We're at 14 responses. Most people have answered most questions; everyone answered the last one :) When it's done, I'll post a summary as well as a link to the full set of responses to each question.

Would anyone be able to cross-post to the German fan forum? It would be nice to be able to hear from as many members of the CC as possible, not just the ones who visit English forums. (I'd add in CreaturesFrance, too, but I haven't been able to access their forums since I put the survey up).

A reminder: this survey will close at 11:59:59pm EST on August 6 (this Saturday). If you haven't written anything yet, please do so now!

I filled out the survey too, but since I've never been part of any CCSF before, I felt like I was walking into a dark room blindfolded. xD

>o< I would love to take part but there's really not much I can provide beyond coming in and taking part in activities that sound fun.

Results

Here's my summary:
When should the CCSF be held?
The majority of people would like it to happen sometime in November.

How long should the CCSF go for?
Votes were fairly evenly split between 'one week' and 'it depends', with a decent showing for 'five days'.

What should a good CCSF have? What should a good CCSF avoid doing?
There were a variety of answers here, but two common themes:
A variety of content (both in terms of game downloads and in activities)
Having things that can involve all members of the community and encourage activity

What in particular would you like to see in this year's CCSF? (In terms of activities, website, etc)
There were a lot of suggestions, but one thing that came up more than once was a celebration of the 20th anniversary of Creatures.

What would help you to be able to contribute submissions (whether art, releases, writing, or anything else) to the CCSF? What do you think could help people in general to contribute?
I reworded this question slightly after a few days, because everyone was writing in what they felt they could contribute. That continued after rewording, so I guess people were just enthusiastic about what they can share!

A lot of people want more information, tutorials, and guides. Perhaps this isn't the best place to ask, but I would appreciate seeing more details in what people want; as someone who has experience with coding outside of CAOS, I'm not as aware of what blind spots exist in the many tutorials we already have for CAOS, and I don't do much poking around in genetics, myself.

People also wanted encouragement and help. I remember a few years ago there was a post for finding help and collaborations pre-CCSF; it might be a good idea to try that again.

From my experience with herding cats participants, I can say that frequent reminders are helpful.

I guess now would be the time to put up the usual follow-up survey asking for themes and such, but we should probably find an organizer or few first. I'd be happy to volunteer, but I realize that I'm mostly a lurker; is there anyone else who would be willing to host or co-host the CCSF?

Also, are there any further thoughts going off of these questions or responses? I have a few of my own, but I'm still putting them together.

I made a list a long time ago of C3/DS coding tutorials, and Ghosthande's got a similar list on her site. A series like on the old CDN, or Helen's cob creation tutorials would be brilliant.

Animating, looping and moving objects (self-moving, like a critter, rather than a bouncing ball) feels like a gap to me. So does a timer script that lets itself be interrupted for pushes and pulls and goes back to where it was (e.g. a plant not regrowing from seed if pushed).

I think there's a lot of room for bringing in 'real programming techniques' and showing how they might apply to Creatures. Also 'how to write code that's efficient and doesn't lag the game like grazer dung'.

I've been an assistant to Liam during the CCSF many moons ago, but I don't feel comfortable taking a lead role. I usually make something as soon as I know where to send it to, I figure that helps.

So now that I have a proper keyboard to type on again...

Thanks for the specific ideas, Malkin! I do have a short guide bookmarked on how to write nicer agents, but I'm not sure if it's even been linked from CCaves (it has from the wiki).

I think there are some interesting ideas in the suggestions for decentralizing the CCSF a bit - I remember the idea of having a blog carnival or similar come up at least once in past CCSF surveys. (For those who don't know: a blog carnival is basically an event where someone writes up a topic or list of topics for people to write on, and each day participants send the link to their post to the host. The host publishes a list of all the links. Sometimes participants include links to other participants' blogs or posts as well. I think this could be fun for creatures bloggers if there was a good list of questions.)

Also, as mentioned before, I remember that a couple of years ago, there was an official thread for finding collaborations and beta-testers and so on leading up to the CCSF. Having something like this again - with links to (updated, if need be) lists of resources and tutorials - could help address concerns that people expressed with needing help with making things. It could maybe also (to address another concern) have some suggestions for what sort of things one can make, along with links to the Wiki wishlist and the Ideas thread, or even the survey results (where a few people put specific requests down). If we're having a theme again this year, a solid or specific theme might help, rather than a vague one like we've had in some past years. Or even several different themes that people can submit to? Just throwing out ideas here.

Overall, I got the feeling that people want the CCSF to be more than a list of downloads with the occasional piece of art or poetry and a wolfling run or two. Not everybody wants the same thing out of the CCSF, of course - in this and past surveys people have noted that they're bored by fanfic and art, while others want wiki-editing activity and coloring pages. Several people mentioned wanting a lot of different activities and ways to participate even for those who don't code (whoever suggested it: I would definitely be up for a fanfic round-robin!).

A lot of people wanted to see something for the C1 anniversary, but multiple people also wanted love for all three games. Maybe we could have themed days - a C1 day, a C2 day, and a C3/DS day? Besides downloads and art, they could have articles on how to x in the game, how x thing works in the game, what the heck x thing within the game is for, ideas on how to shake up x game, recommended downloads for x game, etc.

Also, given how late planning is starting this year, we could consider having the CCSF later in November than usual - maybe the last week, to give people more time before finals and holidays hit. Along with reminders that it's okay to submit late - thanks to losing most of my code, Desert Ruins got in late last year and that worked out okay :)

Any other thoughts? Any other volunteers to help mod or co-mod or otherwise help run the CCSF? Or should I throw up the usual 'what themes and contests should we have' kind of survey?

Survey #2 is now open, and asks about themes and potential activities. I compiled a long list of activities that were held in previous CCSFs as well as those that had been suggested on past CCSF surveys, but there's also room for more suggestions.

Take it here!

This survey will be open through 11:59:59pm EST on September 12.

VioletGrendel, there's a list of ideas upthread, but aside from what Doringo suggested, you can always run a wolfling run, write an article, do a review of your favorite world or metaroom, run a contest, help somebody beta-test their creations, make some music, put together a list of your favorite agents/breeds/adoptions... does that give you any ideas?

Thanks, FaerieHawk!
