I reached out to Steve Grand on his Twitter page. Lol had to send him a letter in 6 parts. Does anyone know how else to get ahold of him? In a month or so, I want to see if I can reach out that way in case Twitter does not work out.

I can give what I posted. I send it via direct tweet. So I think I was supposed to use his @enchantedloom handle in the message instead. That's my bad. The parts are not on my page, and I don't see them on his, so only he will see it I think.
Dear Steve,
Creatures is celebrating it's 20th Anniversary this year. I wanted to say congratulations. You created a game that it's community stood by you, and the game itself for 20 years. Some of us at the Creatures Caves were wondering if you would be willing to mark the occasion. Is there anything you wish to say to the Creatures Community to mark the occasion? I am planning on posting it to the Creatures Caves forum, or if you want to reach out to them yourself, please do. We all would love to hear what you have to say.
Cheers,
Norn_master

Yeah if I don't hear back from him, sure thing. Thanks. I want to give him time to respond. I did notice that the tweets did show up on my page. I will share a link. I only have my gaming blog Twitter ATM.

Well he responded. He wants to give something to us in November when the month of the Annversary happens. I will try to keep in touch with him.

This is wonderful news - Steve is a genius and I can't wait to see what he has in store for us in the finished version of Grandroids. |

I'm sure Gloop will be a kind overlord, lol...
This is exciting though, I can't wait... I admire Steve Grand a lot, he is a genius... I've been really interested in the field of AI and A-life pretty much my whole life, and his work has been incredible.

I would assume it's a statement. This was his response:
@Game_Blog0086 Ha! 6 tweets and still I didn't notice! Sure, happy to say something somehow to somebody. It's not until November tho.
He might give it to us earlier. It might have just been stating that the anniversary was in November.

A small correction, he said he'll be "happy to say something", not that he has something for us. So don't get too hyped. He'll probably just say something to mark the occasion. |

I'm hoping it has to do with Grandroids, too! Maybe he'll be making a public announcement of his progress to encourage "the faithful" so to speak? :p We sure need it what with the disappointment of Creatures Family.

Well, we've not even seen any screenshots yet. Seems a bit early to pass judgment? |

Like I said in the other thread, they've announced things that I already know I won't like, such as the lack of third party. I'm not saying I'll hate it as a game in itself - it may well be fun in its own right - but for me at least it simply won't be a "real" Creatures game. There's a difference between it being a good game (I can't and won't judge that until I play it) and it having the traits I consider essential to a Creatures game. Others may disagree with me on which traits are 'essential' and that's fine; I speak only for myself.

All I know is every time I read his blogs about the things he's working on with them, my head explodes... I'm incredibly excited, and a little afraid at the same time, lol... I still think if anyone actually manages to make the first real Artificial General Intelligence in my lifetime it will be him...
I really think he is on the right track with designing AIs that have to interact with the world the way a real creature does. Giving them as many inputs as possible that are analogs to ours, basically, a 'body' they can experience in as 'real life' a way as possible, not just a brain... From all we can tell about neuroscience, brains are just very complex neural nets, and just work with electrical signals coming into them from the body, and from those it kind of cobbles together what we think of as consciousness somehow as a reaction to all the inputs... Apparently, this is really just the result of a bit which works much like the decision making part of Creatures's brains (though of course with countless more neurons and MUCH more complex biochemistry) that weighs ALL the inputs, including ones stored in memory from learned experience, and makes decisions based on them (CAT scans have shown that our brain can make a decision several seconds before we are even aware of the decision we made in some cases...)
Coming at AI from the perspective of just trying to design really efficient puzzle-solvers like other approaches do, while it CAN make some great problem-solvers, I think will never produce what we would really think of as a real general consciousness. Even if it did manage something like that, any intelligence that did come out of such an approach would be very alien to us, and have a much harder time understanding ethical ideas or acting in a way that we might want them to if they get free reign...
An AI capable of feeling what it perceives as 'pain', as well as many other things common to real living beings, see like us, etc... would, at least hypothetically, be capable of feeling empathy and have an understanding of the world and itself more like our own... After all, our own brains didn't evolve in a vacuum, they evolved along with and as part of our bodies, with the main function to help us adapt and fulfill our needs more efficiently... For sure we would be able to relate to and understand it better. Hopefully having a lot more things in common will be enough to stop our inevitable war with the machines, or at least hold it back a while...

I completely agree with you evol and it saddens me that he isn't getting more attention for his efforts. Every other approach I have seen to general intelligence seems to be focused on making algorithms for analyzing data, then giving said scripts internet access so it can "learn". Imagine raising a child like that, how are we supposed to come up with true intelligence if we give our experiments no grounding, no stable pillars of truth to reason from? Having a body with real needs and drives in it's own little world would give an intelligence some basis for it's learning, and make it think and act in a much more realistic and rational manor.
I am all for the bottom up approach to AI.
