Wells since members have birthdays daily I just didn't like seeing all these new forum threads created that would be posted in for one day and then become useless.

We always used to have separate topics for peoples' birthdays in the past. I liked those; it was like having a big birthday card from the community.

Well, if you think the current mega-birthday thread seems impersonal, then you could always depreciate it, Rascii.

I suppose it's all a matter of opinion.

DarbyDoo: Yeah, I know. But as Rascii said, the single forum thread system is somewhat impersonal. We could welcome other users more "thoroughly", e.g. helping with small problems they might bump into when they're new.

I'm with DarbyWoooooo. I could see the Facebook crowd appreciating this, but I don't feel the need for it personally. It looks like it would be additional work for the moderators too.

I also think it could be useful for wishing people a happy birthday. The current single forum thread system seems kind of... impersonal. And sending someone a private message on their birthday might not publicize the birthday enough.

We're certainly not short on the Welcome Wagon.

Two purposes I can think of are thanking and welcoming other members, which is pretty common in other communities I'm in. However, I agree with the rest. Some information needs to be private, and feedback can be given via the messaging system.

There's something similar to profile commenting on Wikia, except there's no private messaging system. It's right embarrassing to have to write messages where everyone can see them, and pretty pointless otherwise. If I want to know about someone's preferences on a topic, like cats for example, I'd start up a Strangeo topic and see what everyone has to say. PMs are nice because you can have a nice, private conversation or resolve something without half the community knowing. And honestly, I'd stop in the chat before I ever struck up a conversation on a profile.
