You're correct!
I was thinking that the visible faces on the eyes gave it that "compound eye" look, but I might be wrong!
The faces aren't all that visible once the images are shrunk down and turned into playable sprites, though

Was this made in blender? I can see the faces on the eyes. I think that the eyes need some kind of "net" texture like you see on the eyes of flies. But you don't have to do that because I'm pretty sure you have already gone through a very tedious process spriting this.
