So, apparently, a game I just dicovered around 10 minutes ago in in development. It's inspired by "Spore", but not quite. You actually evolve creatures, from cell and such. You don't play as one, but watch them, take care of them and such. It's really interesting and I wanted to give a shoutout, since it's barely even popular.
I read about the project a few months ago. I hope they can finish it one day, although it seems hard...
And talking about evolution games, does anyone else know about Artificial Life, Real Evolution? (AKA Species ALRE)
Yeah! I first discovered it off of a vinesauce stream, and then proceeded to download it myself. It's super cool, but you kind of gotta be careful if you don't wanna break/ crash your game. Anyone here ever played Darwin Pond?
I'm GarbageSnail on SecondLife and Scum (GROSS)#4691 on Discord!
Oh, wow! New site! I've been following them on-and-off for the past year or so. I wish I had the technical skills to contribute to their development. It looks like they've made a lot of progress, and are moving from concepts to concrete programming.
I've watched a few Let's Plays and streams of Species ALRE, they've been pretty funny. I haven't heard of Darwin Pond until now.
Oh, SPORE, what could've been... If anyone's interested, the developers have offered prototypes for free download. They're fun to mess with in short bursts. For some reason I have more fun with the prototypes than the actual game.
Species ALRE is cool but the creatures are creeeeeeeeeepy. I heard about Darwin Pond but never played it.
What about Swimbots? Do you know it? Some people have done Swimbot tournaments...
Swimbots! Yes, I have fond memories of that game, though I've never heard of tournaments. The thing wormy swimbots always creeped me out. I looked it up just now, so it has a new home under the studio Wiggle Planet.
Oh man this looks so cool. I love how you can't directly manipulate how they evolve. Spore was fun in its own right but it really failed as an evolution or biology sim imo.
Yeah, this game looks incredible, and quite ambitious... I can't wait to see what they manage to do... it really does remind me of what Spore promised it would be, but this one looks like they really intend to deliver...
Spore ended up just being a series of minigames combined with sophisticated character creation... there was no actual 'evolution' or true response to environment, just you playing a game to get some of the parts and then picking what you wanted them to look like. And rather than having any kind of concept of fitness for survival, any choices were equally viable (you could make a perfectly viable herbivore with front-facing eyes, talons, and carnivore teeth, for example... brains and senses made no difference at all, and so on... Also, depending on your gameplay, neither speed or defense was necessary, there was no real pressure or competition for food with other species, as food was abundant enough to effortlessly prevent any member of your species from starving.. there was no impetus for any kinds of symbiotic relationships, and so on)
It was really more of a god game (and a rather shallow one at that) with some action rpg and rts elements rather than any kind of a-life or evolution sim.
