How to avoid epidemics in a wolfing run?
Aliena

I have a problem with C3/DS. namely, this nine hours long wolfing run.

I think all my creatures are sterile since hour 2. The antigens 0-3 are running rampant in this world. I don't know how to avoid epidemics like this.
In some wolfing runs, creatures are particularly fertile and healthy. But in others, even if I lock the jungle before I start, my creatures get sick with antigens 0-3, and they lose their fertility fairly quickly.

I haven't had a second-generation norn since hours ago.

What can I do to avoid pandemics like this in the future? Which areas should I lock to avoid this?

The issue is with the bacteria: they can evolve into any antigen.
I remember there being a bacteria nerf patch somewhere, not sure if that handles the infertility antigens.

You could also remove bacteria altogether.

Those are good solutions, but I want my norns to develop their immunity across generations.

I guess I'm stuck with epidemics.

The bacteria nerf patch stops ATP Decoupler, if I remember correctly. Not the fertility problem, but it's honestly worth getting anyway because ATP Decoupler is seriously overpowered.

Are antibodies (or any other form of protection against infections) actually inherited over generations? I always thought you just had to be lucky with mutations in order for Creatures to develop their immunity across generations.

With vanilla norns, I always got slightly better immune systems after a few generations. But with 2017 norns, it seems different. Like they are bad enough at fending off bacteria that they can't go past generation 3.

My worlds always end in bacterialypse.

Maybe try injecting a few lemon pots? They have vitamin c which makes the immune system work faster. I know you want it to be a case of natural resistance over time, but if it's getting bad that could be an option.

Aliena, which antigens would you like to avoid?

I may try to script something together if you want.

I've found that injecting extra anti-bacterial sprays (in C3 and docked worlds) helps the 2017 fend off bacteria. Just put a few near your Norn populations and Norns will likely start using them as toys on their own.

Lemons contain antihistamine and can prevent the spreading of bacteria a lot. There's quite a lot of lemon COBs around on creaturescaves if I'm not mistaken, so use whatever suits you. :)

I’m sorry you’re having such bad luck. Definitely try roamers and the nerf patch. Right now I’m testing genomes I’m developing so most of mine are modded and I don’t play too often with those specific genomes. I can tell you there is no good source of vitamin c in vanilla C3/DS. The hardman pack has some nice pepper pots? Children of Capillita pots agent is pretty nice, and obviously those peppers are also in garden box if you’d like to go that route. Antibodies do nothing, they’re the waste product of the immune system fighting antigens, ignore any fruits or agents that inject them. So I’d really just throw some fruity agents around and you’ll probably get better results.

Did antibodies do stuff in earlier games, or were they also just waste products?

Antibodies are definitely useful in C1, and I was quite certain they worked the same way in C2 and C3/DS.

I'm certain antibodies do fight antigens in DS too. Why would they be there in the first place otherwise?

In c1, they wouldn't fight antigens on their own, but the engine killed the bacteria if antibodies were raised past a high threshold. https://creatures.wiki/Disease has more.

They are only a byproduct of the reaction in c3/ds. The immune system reaction has “antigen+glucose = antibody+by product” and there are genes which modify how quickly that happens based on vitamin c, but there is no reaction which turns antibodies into anything useful or receptors which modify how a disease behaves based on antibodies. If you’d like to look at the genome yourself I highly recommend it, it’s kind of fascinating.

Edit: That’s an interesting article, thank you for sharing that Malkin. There’s nothing in the genome, but maybe there’s more in the engine?

As far as I know, in C3/DS: The amount of antibodies in a Creature reduces the life-time of bacteria.

I've read up on it a bit, and it appears that vitamin C is used for fighting off diseases, while vitamin E should keep the reproductive system in good health. So I'd go with the suggestion of adding things that contain those for your creatures to nibble on :D

That reminds me. There are traces of vitamin C in the Creatures 3 apple patch apples (and perhaps the original apples as well?). Grapes are also packed with vitamin C (and the vines look pretty too!). You can use both of them in C3 and docked worlds. :)
