The Creatures 1 Genetics Kit crashes when I attempt to do pretty much anything to the various windows besides scrolling. (Resizing the display tabs, selecting a gene so I can edit or copy it...) I can see it, I can load it, I can save it, but I can't edit
Anyone has an idea to fix it?
The version I'm on: GOG's Albian Years, default Program Files x86 install, Remaster Patched, on Windows 10.
What I've tried: Running the Genetics Kit from the Program Files folder, from inside the GOG Creatures 1 folder, from inside the Documents folder, the above as administrator, the above in XP SP2 compatibility mode, the above in XP SP3 administrator mode, tried with a reset and retried all three, and each time I was unable to select a gene, it just crashed.
So what am I missing?
I mean, I could go dig up my hex editor and go oldschool with it, but I'd kind of prefer using something meant for it. |

You could always try CrEd32 instead, in a pinch.

There's... a small problem with CrEd32. It can't find the install of Creatures 1 at ALL, and there's no option that I can find to manually tell it "hey, dummy, it's here, look here".
I'm also now very confused because it tells me to update to 1.0.2 or later, but cross-referencing the COBs and agents that came with my clean install with TreeSprite's Creature Grove official CL archive leads me to conclude I have the Object Packs and I'm at least on 1.0.2...
It also can't find the Hatchery, but that's third to the other two issues it has. Is there an unofficial update that fixes those problems?
Edit: The version I found is beta release 0.8, and while I solved the mystery of being unable to find Creatures (it has to be running... Silly me ) it still thinks my registry key for the Hatchery isn't there? |

Try re-running the remastered patch?
Don't worry about it not being able to find the hatchery - that's not a big issue compared to not finding the install location.

Right, no, it's finding it fine when it's running (and when i don't forget to run CrEd32 in admin mode...), as I said in my edit.
It's still annoying as anything because each time I open it, it complains about the hatchery key missing and then about not knowing which version of Creatures is needed.
Still, it's one step up from the Genetics Kit that crashes for some mysterious reason. |

The main feature I like about CrEd32 is that when you edit a gene, the writing down the bottom automatically updates to be whatever it is that you've coded in. If you right-click on CrEd32 and choose Properties, you can make it always boot in admin mode, that should help.
