In a fit of nostalgia, I picked up Creatures: The Albian Years on GOG. It runs surprisingly well on Win8, but I have a couple minor issues:

1. Can't view the cursor when mousing over the "world" in Creatures 2. This isn't a problem in C1, only C2, for some reason. It makes it tricky to pick up or use items, since I can't tell where I'm clicking.

2. Tried to download Norn breeds. Unfortunately, most of them are in the form of handy .exe files which run dandy on a 16-bit OS, but not my 64-bit one. Not a one of these .exe files would run.

Any fixes or alternatives for these situations? I really wouldn't mind having the raw Norn datafiles for the breeds I got, since I have a decent idea of where they go. (I'll post a full list of the Norn breeds I'm trying to get later today; PM me if you have them and are interested in sharing.)

#2: If you have one of the business-oriented editions of Windows 8 (Pro or Ultimate), you can try using the included Hyper-V. I've no experience with it, however. Otherwise, you'll need to set up a virtual machine or partition your hard drive to install a compatible OS. In the last two cases you'll need a copy of the target OS.

As for 2 - I'm guessing you need the patch from Amber Creatures

Razander's solution won't work for me, because I don't have older OS's (I've owned only laptops for a good while, and the OS is always pre-installed, with no real way to make a new copy).

Wooly, thanks for the patch. I think I'll try that first. :)

Fingers crossed it'll work for you. :) I'm on W7 and it's what made it possible for me to get the breeds with exe installers.

I agree, but I'm afraid to say this that the ones you've mentioned are getting a bit outdated. YOu should check out these virtual pc applications. Hope it helps.
