Gaius groups causing crashes!

I set up Random's Room for Gaiuses to inhabit. So far so good (though I did have to quit without saving once because I thought I'd try using Scorport and managed to glitch the bejeezus out of the game.)

I hatched two Colortrue Gaius eggs in one of the corridors there. They can talk without crashing the game- the .catalogue and sound files are in the right places.

As soon as I hatched a third though, the game crashed to desktop with the following error message:

CSE0001: Caught C-style structured exception at 0x0054A2D0

EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION
The thread attempted to read from or write to a virtual address for which it does not have the appropriate access.
Attempt was to read from address 0xD2F617D8

Error opening map file

Windows NT/2000 6.0 build 6001 (Service Pack 1)
OriginalDisplay DirectX (netbabel 148)

This happened again when I reloaded and tried to do the same thing: first two eggs hatched without incident, it crashed immediately upon hatching the third.

The weird thing is, when I tried hatching them in the Meso heatpan instead, there was no crash.

I'm not sure what's going on here but I wonder if it might be related to the wasteland glitch somehow? (Since that's also triggered by having multiple geats in the same place.)

Edit: So I tried moving the successfully hatched ones to Random's Room. Within seconds of putting the third one there (all three in the same corridor, again), the same crash happened. Is it something to do with the close quarters?

Very odd. I have eight Colortrue Gaius eggs ready to hatch in Random's Room, so I will let you know if I run into the same issue. Does the same thing happen with the non-Colortrue Gaius? I would assume so, as the only real differences with mine are their colors and a few very minor genetic tweaks. It sounds more like an issue with Random's Room, though one I haven't encountered.

Just out of curiosity, what level are you hatching the eggs on?

I didn't actually think it was anything to do with them being Colortrue- I just tend towards the overly specific. [nsmile]

I think it was the second level.

I pursued that "maybe it's the close quarters" thought a little further: In a different world than I first encountered the glitch, I tried putting two Gaius in one of the tiny rooms in the middle of the Aquarium (above the fish egg maker.) This time it crashed as soon as the second one hatched. I was able to repeat this result, too.

The error message was the same as before, except for the "attempt to read from..." line: "Attempt was to read from address 0x36EB17EC"

I recall a theory from an older thread about the wasteland glitch that geats produce bad CAs? I wonder if that's related. In any case, it definitely seems to be triggered by putting multiple Gaius in small/narrow spaces.

Geats produce weird CAs, but not "bad" ones. Geats smell like "norn home", since that's the one coming after norn, ettin and grendel smell.

Sprite error? Try hatching a few with ChiChi sprites.

Why would that only happen when they're in groups, though? I'd had a normal Gaius running around that world for a while already with no problems.

Perhaps it is some action they can only do in groups, such as kissing (even babies exchange some innocent kisses sometimes when I recall right).

Most of the time the crash happens before they even have a chance to do something, though. The moment the second one in the aquarium test popped out of the egg, boom.

Perhaps they are just too big for their room in certain poses? The hitbox of creatures changes with their poses. Sitting down they might suit into an area, but standing up may make 'em too big.

I'd expect the crash to happen even with just one Gaius then.

Anyway, is anyone else able to replicate this error?

I'm going to attempt to replicate the error when I have some time to play C3/DS... Likely won't be until next week, as I need a little recovery time after the CCSF! But it will be important to note, as I've been planning on having my metallic world with Gaius. I'm thinking the Freedom Project metaroom would be a decent alternative: Can't complain about short ceilings when the sky is literally the limit!

Just for funsies and !!SCIENCE!!, I hatched a party of five Gaiuses and tried putting them in various places around my testing ship to see where it would crash.

Places the crash occurred:
Random's Room (3 Gaiuses)
Aquarium, small rooms above the fish egg maker (2 Gaiuses)
Capillata Hub (2 Gaiuses; of course, you don't want them in there anyway because of the autokilling-the-doors issue)
Bridge airlock, door closed (3 Gaiuses)
Bridge, lower and middle corridors (i.e. the ones with the umbilical and the medical pod) (4 Gaiuses)
Bridge, upper area (by the camera screens) (3 Gaiuses)
Bridge/Engineering, central corridor (4 Gaiuses)
Norn Terrarium, room with the Learning Center door (3 Gaiuses if connecting door is closed, 5 if it's open)
Norn Terrarium, bottom corridor (3 Gaiuses)
Ettin Desert, bottom room (3 Gaiuses)
Ettin Desert, middle corridor (3 Gaiuses)
Ettin Desert, main area (5 Gaiuses)

Places I was able to put all 5 Gaiuses:
Norn Meso
Workshop
Norn Terrarium, main area/treehouse

At this point I'd spent more time on this than it probably merited and I was getting pretty bored and frustrated, so I didn't test any other metarooms.

Sometimes the crash occurred immediately, sometimes it took several seconds and would crash as I was in another room retrieving the next one.

Seeing as it was happening immediately on hatching in the previous tests, it's probably not related to any interaction between the Gaiuses. The game just doesn't seem to like that many geats in one place. And it's not as consistent as to the size of the area as I expected: I thought the Hub and the upper sections of the Bridge and Desert would be perfectly safe.

Either there's some sort of problem with my installation (though I have no idea how this would happen) or the rule of thumb with Gaiuses is either very small groups or very large open spaces, unfortunately. Or just edit the genome to treat them as "norns", which takes some of the fun out of it and means you can't use Edible Gadgets (which wasn't installed in the test world, btw.)

I hatched a pair of Gaiuses classified as "norn" and plopped them in the small aquarium room to confirm whether this is limited to geats or just a problem with Gaius's unusual size. It didn't crash even after several seconds (and a slapfest), so I think it's a geat thing.

Also, I got one "mystery" crash while testing the norn-Gaiuses, when there was only one "Gaius" in the aquarium room and an egg that couldn't hatch because of the breeding limit. There were four Gaiuses in the meso and one in the workshop at that time.

tl;dr: this is puzzling and discouraging.

Freedom Project probably is the way to go- thanks for the tip, Jessica! I suspect Veridia would work as well, although it's not a thematic fit.

This is an awfully strange problem, and puzzling (you'd think I would have encountered it by now). It's possible your game has personal issues with geats, just like how some "perfectly functioning" agents cause odd crashes in mine. Hopefully the next update I'm planning will be able to solve this problem (and the Wasteland Glitch).

It has also happened to me, on my first try, I hatched the first two, everything was going fine, but when I hatched the third one, when he joined the other two after a few second the game crashed. Currently I don't have my home computer, but once it is back from reparing I will try once again. By the way, it occured in the Norn Meso, in the middle area next to the emphatic vendor.

Is it weird that I'm relieved it's not just me?
