Every time one of my Hardman Norns plays with it, they get the scared look and run away, alternately proclaiming how happy and scared they are. Anyone know what this agent does that freaks them out so? |

If they're anything like my Hardmans, then they're not "playing" with the Cuddly Tree, they're smacking the heck out of it. And the Cuddly Tree doesn't take to being used as a punching bag very well, so every once in awhile, it'll hit them back.
You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there.

No, they're actually playing with it. I tested that and they are "pushing" the toy. They even say that they're happy. If you ask them to express right after pushing it, there's about a 50/50 shot of them saying happy or scared. I just don't understand why they find it so thrilling. |

That's odd. Is the tree smiling as well? If it is then it's probably not hitting them, and I have no idea what's going on.

Yes, the tree is still smiling; I know that it hits back and I am sure they are not hitting it. |

I think it's because of the stimulus the tree gives them, which is or is something similar to "played with critter".
If hardmen are anything like banshee grendels in that respect, then they too are scared by playing with critters. Which would mean they get scared playing with the cuddly tree.
