Has anyone had any experience using Milkshape to create 3D models for creating sprite sets? Thinking about learning how to use the program properly and have a go at spriting.

I don't have experience with 3D modeling myself, but Moe did a tutorial about 3D modeling a norn head - it's for a different program, but it says it's meant to be usable by people modeling in other programs. And Ghosthande released a generic Ettin head model (though for a different program again, this time Blender). I know there are tutorials out there for making individual objects in various 3D modeling programs and that Moe also did one for making a metaroom background, but I don't believe I've seen a full walkthrough of modeling all of the parts of a creature.

I would not recommend Milkshape for making content of any kind for Creatures.

I used to use Milkshape a lot, back when I still developed for The Sims. When I first started making agents and breeds for C3/DS, I tried making them with Milkshape because I was already familiar with it. That's how I made the 4-in-1 plant and the dollies that come with Tulu, among other things.

I quickly ran into a problem: Milkshape wasn't designed to create finished graphics. It was designed to let a person create and edit models for use in (older) 3D games, including The Sims, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, etc. As a result, Milkshape is clunky to use and it doesn't have any rendering capabilities at all. You cannot control the direction, color, intensity or number of light sources, you can't make objects shiny or transparent, you can't apply bump mapping or any similar 3D textures... etc.

You can get a feel for what this means if you compare my Milkshape agents to anything else I've made--or, specifically, if you compare the Sabertooth and Yautja Norn heads on this page. Even my very first Blender models look better than my Milkshape ones, and I'd already been using Milkshape for a few years by that point.

So, yeah, you're much better off with a program like Blender. Even though Blender has more of a learning curve, it's a lot less clunky to use and gives you much better results. It's also free, whereas Milkshape isn't.

Thanks guys! That's really helpful info. Where can I find the ettin head? I'm working on a sprite set for my cross-breeder genome. I want the sprites to be similar but with each genome (ettin, grendel, norn and maybe geat) to retain the look of their respective species. I have the 4 in 1 tree and dollys in my current world, the difference is amazing. Also I love the dollys, my worlds are always full of them lol. Ghosthande, are there any Blender tutorials you'd recommend?

You can find the generic Ettin head here; the download link is at the bottom of the page.

Different people will tell you different things about starting out with Blender... most folks will tell you to get the most recent version, which is (usually) sound advice. It is easier to get help if you're using the newest version, unfortunately I don't know of any basic tutorials for how to use it. The best places to start looking for tutorials would probably be Blender's web site and their forum.

Personally, I still use version 2.43 (the same version I started with back in 2008). I'm not saying it's the ideal version to use--I still use it because I understand the layout, and the current version doesn't seem to work as well on my computer. Using version 2.43 does offer one advantage, in that virtually all of the Blender tutorials I find online work for its layout. My favorite series is the Noob to Pro series, which covers a ton of really useful stuff, from really basic modeling to making animations.

Thanks! I'll have to have a look. My artistic skills are pretty decent but I don't know much of anything when it comes to 3D modelling. I'm hoping to eventually learn how to make agents and metarooms too.
