I'm going to be completely blunt...
I have no idea how to make breeds and agents. Just reading tutorials makes my brain hurt. I'm really no good at learning things that involve codes and scripts, and complicated conversions.
Still, I feel like I could offer something to the community... The one thing that doesn't seem so taxing would be editing sprites. Once again though, all of the numerical codes and stuff is really complicated and the only way I could sprite something is editing the sprites of an already established breed. Just thinking about identifying each piece in a folder full of sprite files makes my head spin...
So this is what I'm asking.
I don't know if it would be possible or not, but it would be incredibly convenient if somebody could put all the sprites of one breed (let's say Chi Chi for example), convert them all into BMPs for easy editing with various programs, and put them into one folder that would be converted into a ZIP file for anybody to download and edit.
This would help newbies and inexperienced people who are intimidated by all of Creatures' coding and scripts create something at least.
Then after somebody downloads the folder and edits all the files, they can ZIP it back up, reupload it to the site, and a more experienced breed creator can batch convert the BMPs back into sprite files and create an actual breed with it.
Would this be possible, or does anybody else see this being useful? I know I would sure be willing to try editing sprite files if all the scary coding and stuff was taken away. |

I think a guide to how the sprite file names work would be more useful than this. It's not as complicated as it looks, and once you learn it you can use any breed rather than just one.
Editing sprites is a lot of work, particularly the head sprites. Each breed has 1910 images just for the head. No, that's not a typo

Oh yikes... I'm sure it will be a bit easier if working with a program with layers so you can rotate/edit individual parts of the head to create new sprites, but jeez that's still a lot!
Either way I'll take your word for it. If this isn't as helpful as it seems, I guess I'll try to find a tutorial to work with. Thanks for the input :] |

The Creatures Wiki gives a pretty good explainiation of how the filenames work
And here's a list of what's in each breed slot. There are no empty slots, so if you're making a breed you'll want to use a slot that isn't already used by a very popular breed.

Sorry if this is incredibly late, but it's pretty easy to get a bmp file from sprite files and I found that doing it myself I gained more confidence in my abilities and in the programs one uses in creating breeds. Working with and recongnizing the files is the easy part, editing the sprites themselves can be the hard part.
