So, I have an idea
What if there were a metaroom that would change over time? Not just the amounts of light and heat, but the ground could get "eroded" or the ground could "shift" over time, all randomly
It'd add an interesting layer to norn evolution and speciation
But my question is more: Is it possible?

Not to make it really random, because one way or another you'd have to represent at least some of those changes with graphics, which means you're limited to the number of possible change sets you're willing to draw/render, and also that the changes can't continue indefinitely.
But making multiple, predetermined possible outcomes that are chosen from randomly would (should) be entirely possible. It would just mean, you know, a lot more work than making a metaroom normally is, because you're making whole sequences of multiple versions of the same things.

The problem with shifting ground is that changing the shape of the room 'on the fly' almost always results in errors when a creature or physical agent is in the way. Graphics would also be an issue, but you can sorta solve that by having the game draw a line on which your norns will walk.
Plus, norns wouldn't care about elevation. It doesn't affect them, other than stopping them from going places. At most you could expect them to evolve a new gait that works better on hills, but with such a shallow gene pool that's nigh impossible.
A room in which food sources, temperature and similar factors change over time would be interesting though.

oooh. maybe apples change to cheese over time? Grazers into butterflies? Desert background into antarctic?

Hehe, I was more thinking along the lines of certain food types becoming sparser in certain areas of the room. Like seeds becoming very rare on the upper floor, for example. This way your norns would be forced to adapt by either learning how to travel properly, or relying less on seeds.

My idea was more about the whole deal with the grand canyon, how a group of norns would be split in two by the shifting "plates" of the metaroom and each would evolve independently.

What if there was a "river" that would dry up in the summer and flood during the rest of the time? It would be placed in the middle of the room to divide it. With optional flood/drought options for longer term projects. I could a simple concept if needed.
(You could have different species of annual flora and fauna in the water. Like killifish!!)

I love the idea--in fact I was (and still do) plan to incorporate "seasonal" floods into one of Bai-Loki's terrariums. The fish wouldn't have been seasonal, though--I'd love to see such an ecosystem, with little critters to match. (Triops, maybe?)
I'm not sure how effective a barrier it would serve, though, since most Creatures have no sense not to go slogging through water, or even falling asleep in it. If it were so wide that Creatures died before they could reach the other side, maybe, but besides that I'm not sure how it could be made to work.

It really sounds like a great idea, sadly I doubt that the engine doesn't have the powers to do that, but everything should be possible when hacking and tweaking with the game.
Yet another idea to feed the imagination, effects like seismic activity and earthquakes. You will hear a roaring sound and all objects begin to move to other places.
