We all know the sort: The excited, over-zealous newbie who makes the mistake of coming right out and asking, "How do I make a COB?" We've all been there at some point, and several of us have been lucky enough to learn the ropes and gain the most-coveted title of "CC Developer."
To make a long story short, I've wanted to get into COB/agent development for about ten years now. For various reasons, time and lack of skills both factoring into it, I've never been able to get into the whole "COBbling" field. I feel dumb for saying it, as most people in the CC simply just learned. I'm no computer prodigy, but I know my way around things (I can remember thinking I was special in grade school because I knew Ctrl+Alt+Del and none of my friends did).
I'm assuming that, after reading the basic tutorials, many COBblers used some type of program, such as BoBcOb. Unfortunately, I found out upon trying BoBcOb that it is incompatible with my laptop (Dell with Win7, go ahead and make fun of me). The sprite builder on Gameware's Creatures Development website seems to work, but I might as well be trying to decipher the Voynich manuscript with a toothbrush and a Kenny Loggins tape.
So, this brings me to my main question: Where do I even get started? In a time when many helpful websites are ceasing to exist and once-essential programs are lost, how does one even being to break into the COBbling field?
I waited to ask this for quite a while now, as I was trying to not be a nuisance. I'm not asking for someone to lay out the foundations of COB/agent-making in a few sentences or do it for me. I've finally come to the point that I have both the time and the willingness to learn, but finding out where to begin has been challenging.
Thanks to everyone in advance. It's good to know that I can come to the CC and ask questions without fear of being called stupid or n00bish. At least I hope.

I'm kind of in the same boat, ColonelJ. Developing COBs and agents has always intrigued me, but I've never been sure where to begin. I was actually thinking of asking something along the same lines, so thank you for beating me to it!
I've found a few resources that look like they could help, but I've never been sure if I was even remotely on the right path to learning. (On a funny note, I think I felt the same way about Ctrl+Alt+Del back in the day! It really seemed to be the solution to most computer problems!)
I'm hoping to follow this topic closely so that I can hopefully figure out where to start. Perhaps it would be helpful to have another COB/agent beginner to learn with. I know I would be very interested to find a way to get into the world of COBs, especially for C1!
That's one great thing about our community: It's pretty much unheard of to see mean or rude comments. I think you worded your questions very well! I hope that you can get into COBbling very soon, and I also look forward to trying to get into myself at some point!

There are tutorials available for C2, but the major obstacle I see is a lack of easy-to-use CAOS documentation for Creatures 1 and 2. The C3/DS documentation on the other hand is superb!
My advice, is to learn how to code in C3/DS before trying C1/C2. The differences between C2 and DS/C3 for instance, are quite marginal.
In either case, a big recommendation I have is to treat the code as a real language, where every command is an abbreviation of what it's meant to do. Don't make the newb mistake of staring at it blankly in awe and fear of it's complexity. It can be read! And just like in grade school, if you can't figure out what a word means, look it up! (That's where good documentation comes in to play.)
If you do this well, you can almost read or write a script like a book.
Also! Bobcob should work on Windows 7. Try the version on AmberCreatures. |
