Sprite question

I was going to mess around with norn sprites, because I really want to learn how to make breeds. So, I need to know what official breeds you can modify the colors and stuff on without legal infringment. I thought that chichis were fine, but what about the magma, astro, harlequin, etc? Oh, I guess I should mention that I'm working with C3/DS norns. Any advice for making norn sprites would be lovely. And I have looked at the tutorials in the sticky tutorial topic. :)

Well, there have been several CL breeds released for free into the public. The only ones not released are the Toxic, Treehugger, Bondi, and Hardman. So, any other official breed than those four are good to go. :)

What program do you recomend for editing? Does MS paint work well enough? I also have access to Paint Shop Pro, if that might be better.

Well, first you have to use sprite builder to get the sprites. Once you have those, then I would suggest that if you have Paint Shop Pro and know how to use it, use that.

Remember to give your sprites the right shadows and everything, just as they have in the regular game. It just makes them look better. :)

I haven't used PSP yet, but I think I can figure it out. Maybe. I was just trying to calculate how many file there are for a full breed with different male and female sprites and baby, child, youth, adult, and old life stages. There should be 140 files for it!? Is this right? :o

EDIT: How exactly do you get the files from SpriteBuilder into a bitmap format for editing, and then back to a .c16 format?

EDIT EDIT: I figured out how to convert the files. But never fear, I'll be back with more questions very, very soon, I'm sure. [evil] :D

I'm going against the no double posting policy, I know, but editing my post a third time is approching ridiculousness! Do you have to change the names of the files to reflect the breedslot they will be going in? And how do I utilize a grendel breed slot?
This isn't really sprite questions anymore...sorry.

So when I go to repackage the sprites as a new set for a baby male head and I want to use the Grendel U spot I would put the file name as:
a10u.c16

Is this right?

Okay, another question. I'm editing some sprite, and I want to keep the purple color of the chichis, but I'm changing other things like hair. Will this infringe on the copyright, if I eventually released the sprite on the internet, made a breed with them, etc? Or can I keep certain aspects of the original coloring without any issues?
