Hey! I've just gotten back into Creatures after a few long years and I have a few questions about C3/DS. I'd be super grateful if anyone could answer!

Bear in mind I play C3/DS, usually docked just for the extra space it provides.

-What kinds of "prompts" can you give to a creature?
For example, I heard that saying "tired" can prompt a creature to respond with how tired it is, but "hungry" doesn't seem to produce the same result (unless this is just a result of unfortunate breeding). What can I say to my creatures to prompt them to respond to me? Anything goes!

-Is there a BABYVOCAB/LEARNEDVOCAB translator anywhere? I figure "eem exmly boop" basically means "me very/quite X" but I'd love to know what X is and whether "babyvocab" is as consistent as I suspect it to be. This also links in with the different "languages" that ettins and grendels seem to speak, so any vocab translators for them would also go down very well!

-Any tips for wolfling runs?
First off, quite basic, if you have any examples of what to do and what not to do in a C3/DS world (including, but not limited to, dealing with that large "foodless" ship space between the DS teleporter and the terrariums) or what breeds to avoid, whether certain fanmade breeds tend to make sliders or anything... that kind of thing!

I really appreciate the fact that the community is still up and going (my usual rule of thumb is, if some are within 2016, it's still worth a round of applause!) so honestly even if you can't answer my questions, still ending up on this forum post is a cool tradition being carried on.

Thank you one and all!! If this is in the wrong topic or subforum, please let me know and I'll happily delete/move ASAP :^)

"Hungry" is not a single thing. The hungers for starch, protein and fat are treated as 3 completely different drives, so you'll have to address them individually. Alternatively you can ask "express" to see what everyone is feeling like.
Prefixing a creature's name to a command should usually only make that creature execute it, so "sally express" would only be asking Sally for her feelings or "fred eat fruit" only propts Fred to eat.

Baby vocabulary is only consistent to a degree. You are already pretty close with your guess. While certain eems and boops do mean things, it won't get more specific than "me very/quite X". The language file actually can be viewed with a plain text editor like notepad, but words are not split up further than "qualifier" and "drive" or "noun".
So for example you can not say that "dat" is always a fruit. It is just a universal placeholder for nouns.

For the ship... There is a couple of plants that are not exactly picky about their growing conditions, both downloaded and already in the game. You could use those to populate the area, though the travel between ships is typically seen as a challenge for creatures. Overcome a harsh environment to reach a nice one.
Something you might want to look into is the umbilical fix, which relables the C3/DS connection from an elevator to a door, massively helping with the navigation.

There's only a limited amount of nornbibbles that can be applied to a certain object or action, but predicting exactly what a Norn means is not easy unless they know part of the vocabulary!

Typing any of the three hungers can result in a Norn commenting on them, although it can make you weary to type 'hungry for starch/protein/fat' every time. I'm not sure if they can comment they are full if they're generally well-fed or always in response to a specific hunger question.

Dealing with empty spaces can be done in a variety of ways depending on how much food you want to be there. You could place dispensers that some of the Norns will realize are good to use, or use some of the community-made tools to time the dispensing of food from them. You *could* bring over some self-replicating food sources from certain metarooms or simply get cobs of plants that can grow there.

The best answer for a not-too-easy wolfling run would probably be the Garden Box and Patch Plants for it. It's an extra tool that allows you to set up certain sources of food (usually qualified as fruits, food, or manky) for your creatures to enjoy, and allow them to renew during seasons you select at a rate you specify. There's not a lot of limitations to it!

If you want of things that self-reproduce and replicate, 4-in-1 plant, The Ordingrass+Ordintree+Caterpillars mini ecosystem, or the Munchrooms (vendor accessible through the Terra Pluvialis room or throuth the TP2DS pack that you should be able to find on here) are able to grow almost anywhere while not reproducing at a completely ridiculous rate.

A good food vendor would be the Bountiful Bread Basket since it sends out foods that qualify to different types (Food, Fruit, and Seed), thus satisfying your Norns' needs.

As for breeds, certain Norns do become problematic when mixed with others genetically because of how their gene order is set up, but I wouldn't know enough about that issue to recommend anything. Just make sure to try and select creatures with the same brain improvement (CFE, CFF or CFE+Gizmo being the most popular) whenever possible. Other than that, just common sense - placing Hardman or Beowulf Norns together with Grendels or some particularly fragile Norns would not be advised, and mixing of toxic-types with regular types isn't good for the populace, either.

I document some of my playthroughs in a blog-style fashion with comments enabled. I may just change them into a blog, but if you're interested in reading such things beforehand, feel free!

Completely forgot to mention that! The mushrooms that naturally grow in the C3 grendel jungle feel very home around the C3 bridge area! You could try to use the jungle seed bank to get a bunch of spores and populate them there. I used to have a lot of success with that.

Wow, you guys are fast :^) Thanks so much for the replies - these are very helpful!

For the bibble stuff, the fact that it's much more "umbrella generalisations" actually explains a lot. And I have to say there's something very cute about the baby-speak, and the way they have trouble with the same consonants as children do while they're still learning a word... haha anyway

These are all really good suggestions! I actually got the Garden Box yesterday (I was iffy about it at first but now I have the hang of it it's a MARVELLOUS tool and I am in love with it) so I may try placing some on the bridge.

The jungle mushrooms, too, are a really good idea! I don't know why, since I already know the game works in mysterious ways, but I just wasn't even thinking about populating the bridge with flora because it seemed so inhospitable-looking. I should bear in mind that looks are only skin-deep ;^)

I do think the bridge should still be a little scarce at least. I'm keen on exactly what Papriko said - the norns crossing a difficult environment in order to reach another haven. I'm probably going to go around and collect up all the teleporters for my next run so I guess we'll see how well that holds out.

I'm being quite careful with my norn selection but I'd like to try some straight-up regular default Chichis mixed defaults first, just so I have a frame of reference for how long they last. I'm sure I'll be a lot more impressed with the modded genomes that way. Plus sometimes a good old default breed run is good for the soul. (But, yeah, not forever!)

Thank you so much, guys! It's great to see the Creatures community is still as helpful as ever. I'm sure I'll think of more questions so thank you for being so patient.

I do have another one for now: does anyone know of a good IQ test? I've never bothered trying before but I'd like to see how people usually conduct them. I found one for C2 a long time ago, but I'm not sure where to start looking for ideas with C3/DS.

I'd be curious which IQ test you know of for C2. The only one I've ever heard of is the C3DS one Danikat came up with.

Also, I wrote a guide to the major C3DS genomes and their compatibility here, if that would be helpful.

Amanora's genome was the creatures I mentioned, by the way, as being somewhat incompatible because of a different order of genes, particularly the pigment ones.

I did successfully reproduce Dream Norns with other Norns however.

goodmode, please remember that C3DS Norns can vary quite wildly in their lifespans especially since a mutable trait; the basic breeds tend to last between 3.5 and 7.5 hours, I believe, with Bondi Norns having the longest lifespans.

If you'd like some colorful additions with very basic genetics Yellowstone Norns use pretty much the basic ChiChi genome and most of my crossbreeds using that breed were fairly healthy and easy-to-please Norns. If you'd like old looks but slightly more breed-specific genetics, Felis Norns were meant as Siamese Norns with a bit of uniqueness, although I haven't used them yet myself. If you'd like a reverse of the Magma Norns but without mental alterations, Frost Norns are available in both basic and CFF variants! Make sure you have Magma Norns installed first. That'd be it for breeds that don't have too many unique traits or improvements. From now on it's a whole sea of breeds to enjoy; C3DS has probably more total breeds than any other Creatures game!
