So I went through with it: I made a generator that offers suggestions for C3/DS players who want to start something, but don't know what.
Click
I would like to improve on it, however. Think of this as an alpha version. To improve on it, I want to hear from you:
What do you normally do when you play creatures? Do you have any quirks in your playstyle? Do you have any suggestions you think other players might enjoy?

Something you might want to consider adding would be population control measures. An example might be:
"[Export/Kill/Splice/Make Infertile] [creatures] after they have [#] eggs"
You can use the options from Amaikokonut's Population Control Options as inspiration for this.
Oh! And it might be fun to add some goals or win-states to your random generator! Things like:
"Stop when you reach generation [#]"
"The last [creature] standing wins"
"Stop after [#] in-game years has passed"
Finally, some other suggestions I have are:
"Enable Fast-Ticks [shift+ctrl+F] for [#] [minute] long intervals"
"Have a maximum population limit of [#] [creatures]"
"Have a maximum population limit of [#] [males/females]"
"Always have at least [#] [creatures] in your world"
"Always have at least [#] [males/females] in your world"
"Use seasonal Garden Box patch plants"
"Keep [creatures] locked out of [metarooms]"
"Never pick-up your [creatures]"
"Never hold your [creatures]'s hands" |

Thankyou! I've added your suggestions, and you inspired me to add a few more ideas of my own!

Wow, awesome! Thank you for including them!
I do have one question though: When you get a result of "Stop when your [creatures] are homogenous/heterogeneous", what do you mean by that? Can you give an example? |

I really like this idea (I'm surprised nobody's come up with it until now, actually). Clicking the generate button seems to not do anything, though?
Leporidae: I expect "stop when they are homogenous" would mean that you wait until the same traits are seen in all members of the population... they have averaged out basically. This is what I do usually... I start off with several different breeds, then wait to see which body parts, behaviors, etc. become the most widespread.
But including the term heterogeneous throws me, since it has the opposite meaning. I guess you're supposed to wait until mutation has made them all dissimilar, or something?

Strange... I have an idea of what might have caused it, though. I'll try to fix it this morning, but I may have to wait until later today.
As for going until the creatures are homogenous, Ghosthande hit the nail on the head. Creatures tend to homogeny anyway.
With heterogeny, you go until interbreeding and/or mutations render your creatures to be different. I leave how different up to the individual player. Just appearancce-wise is fine, but if somebody wants to extend it to genetics, that's fine.
Heterogeny would probably require selective breeding.

Gengineer norns to have this trait: redness
Always have at least 15 ettins in your world
Never pick-up your ettins
Use a silly manual naming scheme
Use an ettin paradise theme
Gonna change "Norns" to "Ettins" and then run with it. |
c1anddsaddict
|
4/27/2015 | |
These are the themes I have so far, in case anyone has anything to add:
nostalgia, beach, desert, plains, grassland, garden, ocean, forest, jungle, spaceship, arctic, pond, swamp, creepy, cutesy, technological, holiday, seasonal, danger, toxic, cave, norn paradise, ettin paradise, grendel paradise, nature, night, music, nursery, rainbow, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, bleak, feline, metallic, quaint
_________
I've fixed the problem, and I've been adding more suggestions. Some of them involve a bit of technical work or creativity, but I don't think that's unreasonable (I draw the line at "create a new agent" and things like that). What do you think?
I also added several more story-oriented suggestions: coming up with backstories for creatures and the world in general, only allowing creatures who declare love for one another to breed, letting creatures who hate each other duke it out one-on-one, etc.

"Start with a fairly homogenous group of norns and stop when your norns are all heterogenous"
Ouch! Hard... I'd have to research mutation-inducing agents.
"Don't hatch any eggs"
Well, nevermind.
I love this idea! I'm also a sucker for generators, I used to spend hours on Seventh Sanctum.
For the themes, I'd suggest instead of Creepy: Monstruous, Halloween, Eldritch (that Cthulhu metaroom, what was it called?)
also: Retro (as in c1, c2 throwbacks), Ancient (as in dinosaurs), Neon, Real Animals, Fantasy, Steampunk.
There are a few too many challenges that are not really convenient, to fix that:
"Geats" should have a lower probability of appearing compared to norn, grendel, ettin. Could there be an option to exclude challenges that involve genetic engineering? And if it's possible, some sentences should exclude others, such as "no hatching eggs" and challenges involving breeding.
About suggestions: things that involve fighting or survival challenges would be interesting. Or splicing. And experiments!
More sentences (or at least likelyhood of sentences) involving themes would be nice, be it metarooms, decorations, creature, names or combinations of them.
-rig traps in *room*
-train a *species* to fight *other species*
-train ALL *species* to fight *other species*
-breed a creature with a tint/swap mutation in all life stages
-breed your *species* until they all have the same tint/swap mutation.
-do not use agents that make norns breed faster
-remove all *type* type agents from your creatures' reach (edible type agents, foods and critters)
-have *theme* *species* living in a *other theme* themed metaroom
-let natural *grendels or ettins* eggs hatch, but always splice them with one of the existing creatures.
-compare *breed* and *breed* in an experiment, write down your findings (including unofficial ones if possible)
-Take a screenshot of your world, and turn it into a desktop background
PS: What does this: "Give your creatures air bubbles" mean? |

Halloween is meant to be included in the general "holiday" theme option. I elected to go for a general holiday theme instead of listing individuals holidays because people might not want to do, say, an explicitly Halloween-themed world in the middle of April. I could change that.
Ancient (I'd call it prehistoric), Neon, Eldritch, Monstrous and Real Animals work just fine. I'll definitely add those.
Retro is meant to be covered by "nostalgic", though I like your wording better. I think I'll add Retro, but keep nostalgic (nostalgic for some people might be using chichis, or a docked world, etc.).
I like the idea of Fantasy and Steampunk, but I'm not sure how doable they'd be with the available CC. Steampunk is a bit more iffy than fantasy, which does have Ainarda (and possible backstories that can make it fit). I won't add themes unless I think people could reasonably do them without making new agents and/or metarooms for them.

Good idea, and doable. I'll add that to my next edit.
SpaceShipRat wrote:

I would have to make a completely separate generator. I'm willing to do that.
SpaceShipRat wrote:

I don't think that's possible on this generator, I'm afraid.

Could you please clarify this for me, please? I'm a bit unsure of what you mean.
SpaceShipRat wrote:

That refers to an expansion of Magic Words that allows aquatic creatures to breath safely on land and land-dwelling creatures to go or even live underwater without drowning.

This is impressive, looks like a lot of the things I was going to suggest are already there. Not sure if you have something like these but:
- Move all your creatures to a different metaroom after a certain number of generations
- Add a certain number of new creatures after a certain number of generations
- Add new creatures when your creatures are homogenous
- Increase (or decrease?) the population limit when you get to certain generations
- Always keep the genders even
- Keep more than two separate groups of creatures (I see you have this but it only says two )
- Keep separate groups of creatures and keep splitting them up into more groups as the population increases.
- Avoid inbreeding, export/kill any inbred creatures
- Pretend your creatures are monogamous, and export/kill them if they cheat on each other. |

I don't have any immediate suggestions for ideas/themes/whatnot, though I will say I like what you've got so far.
However, I would like to point out that it's probably a good idea to make it so the same idea doesn't show up twice (e.g. I just got a suggestion that said "Don't bring your creatures toys" twice).

All added, along with Spaceshiprat's suggestions.
I haven't made a generator without the genegineering suggestions yet. Instead, I've made those suggestions rarer.

I don't think there's anything I can do about that, unfortunately. That sort of thing happens more often than it should. I can decrease the odds of it happening, though, by continuing to expand the list.

About the words, I hadn't noticed "nostalgic", that's probably more immediately understandable than "retro". Fantasy: I was mostly thinking dragons, elves and fairies. (Draconians, Gargoyles, Treehuggers, Butterfly...) Maybe "storybook" or "fable" rather than fantasy.
"Steampunk" was a stretch, but it's always near the top of every CCSF theme poll, maybe we actually need to let it win for once, before adding it to the generator
-remove all *type* type agents from your creatures' reach (edible type agents, foods and critters)
Uhm, yeah that one got away from me a little. I was thinking
-Remove all *food/seed/fruit* from the world.
Then I thought, wouldn't it be interesting to remove every object of a certain type, not just food, but maybe all dispensers, or doors, buttons, bugs, any one type of object. You can check what the game tags an object as, by clicking it with the little question mark hand, (whatever that was called.) So:
-Remove any ** type object from the reach of your norns
(So you could still use certain agents, such as dispensers, so long as your norns can't.)
Add both!
punkmogwai wrote: -Keep more than two separate groups of creatures
I like this suggestion, can you make it quite likely to appear, and always having a precise number? (one group, two groups, and so on?) I think it's one of the things that will most define what happens in the world.
Maybe some variations on the theme,
-Keep creatures of *2/3* different species.
-leave creatures access to at least *3-7* metarooms.

Ooh, the thing you added about different groups of creatures that can trespass on each other's territory and fight each other, was another thing I was going to suggest but thought it might be too complicated. I had a lot of ideas like that, based around trying to make the creatures live like real animals in "packs" and such, but it gets even more complicated
(Also I had never seen that random generator site before and I'm now addicted to making my own, non-Creatures-related generators) |

If you'd like to see that on the generator, you could do a write-up of that world concept. One of the things that's lacking on my generator is full on playstyles. There are a few, but not so many as I would like.
Wolfling Run
Feral Run
Nurture World
Alpha Run
Random Event Run
Trade World
Single-Gender World
Egg Olympiad
I'll admit it's a tall order, but I love seeing what people come up with for world concepts.
Oddly enough, that was the exact same idea I thought could be expanded into a full-on world concept. I wonder if/how we'd do things differently.

It appears that one of the possibly results has broken coding. This was a result I got from the generator just now:
Whenever the [grendel]|ettin|norn|grendel or ettin|norn or grendel|ettin or norn|norn, ettin or grendel] mother lays an egg, do not interfere with the creature it produces at all |
