Creatures 4 What If's

I felt like starting a "What If" thread pertaining to a possible Creatures 4. No, I'm not saying that this is for any possible Creatures 4 game that has been talked about by companies, just a fun musing of what you'd like to see in the creatures games.

I, for one, want to see many things in Creatures 4. But I'll list a couple and post more later.

Navigation
1. Bring back the toolbar that Creatures 1 and Creatures 2 had, with all the applets too. The navbar can stay as well, but the top bar was a serious mistake on their part to remove.
2. More indepth applets, and applets that can pertain more to breeding specifics and geneticist specifics.

Genetics / Breeding
1. Dominant and Resessive genes. Can make for some mighty interesting things to pop up.
2. Norn template?
3. Family Tree applet
4. Family Tree file exported in .creature file to make it so everyone can see tree.
5. Pigment Bleed / Colour start off with a base of ONE embryo gene. Can add more in other life stages in genetics kit if you want.
6. Better pigment bleed / colour.

What about you guys? What would you want to see?

I'm sure that this can be an interesting discussion.

Don't mind me just tweaking your topic there - it's a good idea. :)

I'm probably in a minority but if there was/is going to be a C4, I love to see it brought back to the graphics style of C1 and C2. I don't really appreciate the "futuristic" feel that C3/DS has. I think there's just something more realistic(?) about the old style, like it's easier to get engrossed in the game and believe you're really in that environment. It's as if you've crashed landed in a strange new world.

Ooh! I agree. I'd also love to see a more natural feel to the worlds, and bigger and better places to roam. Planets please? Maybe? I kinda also didn't quite like the "futuristicness" of it.

Variety of norns too? Like... YOu know how C1, C2, C3/DS, CA all have norns, but they all have a different style? Maybe more of that going on in ONE game. That'd be cool. :]

Yeah, a variety of different breed styles would be interesting to see in-game, especially when breeding them together. Eh, we can dream. ;) And whilst we're dreaming, the introduction of some new species would be good too.

A more stable ecology, and bringing the C1 and C2 herbs back. I loved those. :>

Oh yes. Definatally new species. Maybe more than one? The Geat for sure, but mabye two others? I'd love to see the variety.

Maybe a creature that is rather = to the norn in some ways.

Also, more variety and breeds for Ettins and Grendels. They get no love.

YES. Ecology should come into it more.

Here are some more ideas:

Breeding
Also, I'd suggest to have it so when creatures breed, there wouldn't be the body-part swap, but rather it blended. But in another forum a while ago, I posted a long post explainging why it's rather impossible.

1. Artist's Point of View = Thousands and thousands of thousands of things to draw. It'd never end.

2. Programmer's Point of View = Impossible to make it blend and still look good and playable.

I think, instead, they should make more swapable parts. Arms should be in three parts forearm, upperarm, hand. Legs should be Thigh, shin and foot. Heads could have ears and head.

To make it work with much better variety that way.

Besides, an Ettin with norn ears would be cute.

Online
It'd be nice if the online stuff was a little fuller and more flushed out. And maybe it didn't have to rely TOO much on a server. Mabye a lot in the same way as a Gaia server or Neopets? So we don't have to worry about that specific one dying and we can't go online anymore... Maybe a website for it much like Gaia or Neopets, and you can look through stuff with more detail.

Oh, and the warp can stay. That's pretty cool.

Graphics
LESS FLUFFY! No more of pictures taking half a year to appear or for exporting norns to be a chore.

Plus, having to scroll though things one at a time is annoying. I like lists. Lots of lists.

They should have all the breeds of the ones in the previous games and new ones too.

You know, I really missed the applets, too. Although I think it would be funner to have them in those stylish little windows, like the health and death screens in C3. Maybe the links could be in the tabs instead of on a menu; I really enjoyed having those tabs. The windows in the first two games were nice, but then they suited the overall look; I don't think it would work as well for a newer game.

Of course that hinges on whether the game would have graphics similar to C1/C2 or C3/DS. I like the looks of C1 a lot, but after C2 I couldn't go back to a game that didn't have 3D-based graphics. I like the way the Norns were drawn in C2, but that fit well with their sparsely-haired "look": it wouldn't look as good with the newer, longer-haired Norns like the Bruins and Bondis.

I would definitely like to see a better ecology. Creatures 2 worked well, but the same species were repeated over and over in different parts of the world (like Triffids growing under Yggdrasil and in the swamps). And Creatures 3 didn't pay enough attention to how animals interacted; certain species kept dying out, and then you'd have no way of bringing them back without using some 3rd-party invention.

As far as more body parts, I have to agree; but I'd really like to see "base" body parts and "blended" body parts. For example, the typical upper arm could have a "base" upper portion that extended underneath the lower portion, and the lower portion could have the upper edges "stippled" so that it looked transparent. By ensuring that the lower upper arms always came from the same parent as the upper lower arms, you could have Norns in which the coloration on different regions blended more naturally, without the need for special graphics for each hybrid. It would also be better if eyes, "sideburns" and muzzles counted as different body parts too; it would be very nice to be able to have Norns with different colored eyes.

I also did not like the way the photographs worked in C3. It would be nice if there was no "delay", and if pictures were saved in .bmp/whatever format on the computer, where they could be easily accessed without the need for some special program to do it.

And of course we would have to have the Invisible Hand feature back.

I think there's actually an agent out there, somewhere, that gets rid of the "camera delay" in C3. Darned if I remember where to download it, though. :/

I'll come back later to contribute to this discussion better, but in short: "better body part blending yesplz."

You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there.

The idea of blended parts THAT way is certainly a good idea. But it does impede on 3rd party development of breeds. You'd end up with some pretty funny looking thinks that way.

Unless, there is something like a .att file, but for that like a .ble file or something like that. :] THEN that'd work.

Certainly an awesome idea.

I think applets should be more... more... useable. And awesome... and... Well, there. Being there helps too.

Ah, people have such good ideas. :]

i don't understand why everyone wants 3D. i personally love both C1 and C2 graphics and wish any "possible" new versions reverted to those styles.

Yes, I'm the forum [devil]... Any questions?

They did, most particularly C2 in my opinion. It had a nice feel certainly to it.

I also would like a bigger and better community.

Maybe a site especially for creatures that is connected with your online name? Kinda like what they have now, but more in depth. Better forums, a place to post up downloads and things like that. A place for 3rd party breeds and agents.

Make it so people who normally couldn't join the community in that matter, get together.

I LOVED the Creatures Community from long ago. Even though I was a lurker. But if I had something like THAT, then I'd have contributed long ago. :]

@azu: you want a centralized community repository, but you also don't want to rely too much on centralization...?

alllllllrighty then

@angel: working in 3d is piles more efficient than 2d -- you can filter it, make it render in the same style as the older games... and in the end it's far more mutable and takes a fraction of the time. There's a bit of warmth in working with sprites, but I'd prefer a game with a longer lifespan over a game that feels homely.

as far as I can see, this thread seems to be nitpicking C2/3's failures and looking for a C3.5 therein. Nothing wrong with that, but it's a bit misleading...

Gryph, I apologize if it sounded like that, but that's hardly what I meant. I mearly mean that if there was a place for people who can't make their own sites to put norns up for adoption, agents, other things etc. etc. (much like this site, which is awesome) then that'd be a great thing to have. Certainly would be more benificial to the community than detrimental.

And that doesn't mean people won't make their own sites, I'm sure that there will be lots of awesome places to go to if there's a Creatures 4.

As for the nitpicking, inorder to make a new game, you have to improve on the old. So... I guess some of it sounds like nitpicking.

Sorry if it comes across that way.

Okay.. What if Creatures 4... Had a way to see Creatures in an isometric view? Not nessisarily 3D. And you could push it down to 2D if you want.

Certainly would be interesting to back away from 2D.

But... 2D is still great. :]

I don't understand what the problem is with using 3D graphics for sprites. Sure C1 Norns were cute, but I wouldn't want to go back to that after C2 and C3, because the Norns in the later games were drawn better; the ears were more realistic and such. I actually like the C3 Norns best; I like that they have actual hair and that their ears are more natural looking. They have more character in a way, they look a little more real. I'd hate to go back to C1/C2 graphics after being treated to the graphics in C3, for me that would not be an improvement.

Azumizai

  8/21/2008

Ah, you're quite correct. C1 and C2 were great, but the fact that C3 and DS utilized 3D software made them certianly look much better and more realistic. I hope that they keep them that way, but I'll still love the 2Dness of the original two games.

Hmm, a thought came to me earlier when I was thinking about norn genetics.

A lot of their personality is coded through their genetics. But what if norns had a personality that was serpate from that (but slightly influced by). What if Creatures 4 had a wider range of personalities that helped to distinct creatures and make the game even more awesome to play?

No need to apologize to me, I'm just making observations.

As for my own ideas, I think Creatures 4 needs to find a happy balance of biochemistry and playability, something that the earlier games have had trouble with. If nothing else I would like the game to stay an artificial life simulator, not become a fashion runway.

  8/21/2008

Oh! Yes! I very much agree. Now that is a good idea.

I'd definably like for it to be much more playable. Certainly. And if Creatures 4 was a game that you could continually go back to with new and interesting things to do, then that'd be a bonus.

Because I am certain now they can make a fantastic alife engine that could bring whole new levels to Creatures.

What if Creatures 4 also had a sort of... adventuring part to it. Not a find applet really, but a way for you to discover things and for you to be able to delve deeper into a slight story.

That'd certainly be appealing as long as it didn't cripple your freeplay.

Definitely. Like how the PS2 version of The Sims had a story mode and a freestyle mode; you could choose to play the story mode if you wanted, but it wasn't necessary.

I dont know if it has been mentioned but no more pointless scavenger hunts such as the Pickups. and as for the norns AI i´d like a happy medium between the willing to learn norns from the first game and the almost robot like norns from C3.

I liked the scavenger hunts a lot. I'd just appreciate not having to hunt down the medical tools, like in C2. I lost so many Norns simply because I hadn't found that tool yet--or I'd found it but my stubborn Norns refused to activate it. I would like to see the attitude of the original Norns, though--as long as they really were like the norns in C1 and not the "more complicated" C2 Norns, I couldn't stand how rebellious they always were. They'd starve themselves to death just because I told them to eat!

That's why the Game State Controller COB was so handy.
