"There aren't really any canon characters, save for Docking Station's Lone Shee." I think Chosen was written before Lisa clarified that the LS wasn't technically canon. I never really considered Kaia to be a Mary Sue before. I've read so many Creatures fanfics where one or a handful of the characters had super special powers or were the prophesied savior of their world that at this point it feels more like a standard CC cliche than a sign of Mary Sue-ism to me. Incidentally, I'm pretty sure I've utilized every Mary Sue characteristic at some point in my fanwriting career.  You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. If that leads to somewhere unexpected then perhaps you really needed to go there. -- Jim Adkins |

Oh. Yes, that's right. ... Wait, if he's technically not canon, then what's the actual explanation for the volcano randomly rising out of Albia's crust? I can't remember if there even was an explanation before DS was released. :/ (I'm kind of starting to wish I'd made a screenshot of Lisa's post, because everytime the timeline crops up I start questioning if I imagined the whole "he's not part of the official storyline" quote. :p ) You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. I was going to go on a rant about how it wasn't a retcon because it didn't overwrite any preestablished explanation for the volcanic erruption, but then I decided to look it up just in case and, according to Wikipedia, you're right: it's an "additional retcon." I was thinking of "subtraction retcon," which is... evil and not what happened here. You have to be honest with yourself when you are writing. All I'm sayin' is, I am pretty sure the Lone Shee was involved since the beginning. That was not something tacked on later. I have no proof for this, however. I don't have the C2 book (the big, thick one that sold separately from the game, which is what I assume you're talking about), so maybe it does explain things, but I honestly don't remember anything about the cause of the eruption (or the Lone Shee) being mentioned until a few months before DS was released. It's entirely possible that plotpoint was planned from the very beginning by CL, but I don't recall it being revealed to the community until late into the series. It's also entirely possible that I simply missed that revelation when it was first made and caught up to it much later.  ETA: I went through my files (yes, I have files >_> ) and found the articles I was thinking of. They date back to 1998, right before C2 was released; unfortunately, I could only find an archive of the first one: Article 1 ("Shee Loves Me, Shee Loves Me Not" ) I can type/scan the others if you'd like and post them, but the general idea is that CL was hinting at the evolution of Albia from Old to New via the volcano, and there was no mention of the Shee beyond that title pun. Granted, they don't mention any other potential cause, but this is why I have the impression that the LS wasn't worked into the plot until later.
