Creatures Caves

I can open genomes in the genetics kit just fine. I can look at them just fine. But when I attempt to select one to edit, it immediately crashes. No highlight on the one I clicked on or anything. If I click anywhere on the gene editing list just once, it crashes.

COMCTL32.dll is in the right directory. I've tried running the kit as an administrator. I've installed the remaster patch (which is working because I don't get registry errors anymore). I even in a last-ditch effort closed any creatures-related applications (the DDNA analyzer and C3, though I'm not sure how that could cause conflicts with C1). Still didn't work.

It works fine on my roommates laptop, which is running Windows 10. I run Windows 8.1.

Any idea what could be causing my problem or how to fix it?
