I am using the borg utility and I downloaded the parakeet, large yellow dragon, and the love herb off of the cobs download section of the site. Now, the game has crashed and it keeps saying "unexpected file format." It will not let me into the game at all, with or without the Borg utility.
I know I will probably have to end up reinstalling again, but is there anyway I can get my norns out of the game and transfer them to the new game once I reinstall? This is getting frustrating and I wish gog would not sell games that are this buggy.
I even tried deleting the files for the three items I installed and it still did no good. I have had terrible luck with these games, I'm considering just sticking with c3ds, but c1 was starting to grow on me. Any help would be appreciated. Do you think there's any hope of salvaging some of my files? |

I tried the backup in the emergency kit and still kept getting the same error. So, I uninstalled the game and reinstalled it from gog.com and the same error keeps coming up. Could there be something wrong with gog's versions of the game? Anyone know more about what could be causing this?
It's too bad because I was actually starting to like this version of Creatures, but it seems to not be worth all the hassle that comes with trying to get it to run. I know I've lost all the norns I had but I would like to start another world. Any help would be appreciated. |

Do you have a split installation?

I don't know what caused the error, but according to some old a.g.c. posts, one way to fix it is to go into the backup folder and replace the world.sfc file in the main folder with the one from the backup folder. If that doesn't work, try deleting world.sfc, then copy eden.sfc and rename it to world.sfc. It's possible that the uninstallation/reinstallation process didn't touch all the files, especially if you installed it to somewhere other than the My Documents folder.
Personally, I have been running the GOG version for a long time and I don't believe I've had the error, and the post I referenced above is from 1999, so it's probably not this particular version being especially buggy in this instance. |

Did you inject any of the COBs? |

No, I didn't re-inject any of the cobs. |

But you had injected them at some point? Were they still in the world when you closed the game? |

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you.
Yes, they were still in the last time I closed the game. I even tried using the emergency kit to start from scratch and the error still comes up. Even when I uninstall the game and go to gog.com and reinstall it still won't let me open a world and just gives the error message "unexpected file format."
Could there be something in my registry that is doing it, making the error continue even when the game is reinstalled? |

Problem solved (temporarily)
I uninstalled the game, then went to regedit and deleted the complete registry for Creatures 1. Then, I went to gog.com and reinstalled the game. From there it worked for about three hours and crashed again from an unrelated problem (I'll post it in another thread). So, if anyone else gets the same error, make sure the registry is cleared out before reinstalling. |
