I just purchased C1 off the GOG website and after awhile my world gets crashed with a message that is either "grendel.vce was not found" or "female.vce was not found." I am using the skirty cheat in the registry, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and it still happens.
I haven't played C1 before, I'm more familiar with C3 so I'm not quite sure what the error is referring to. Anyone know more? |

The vce file is like a master file for the sounds used for the female voice and the grendel voice - telling the game which sounds to use.
In C drive, there should be a folder called 'GOG Games' and then 'Creatures 1'. In that folder, there should be three files - male.vce, grendel.vce and female.vce.

I checked and I do have all three files. When the error message comes up I have tried saving the world and then reopening it and that seems to work until the next crash, about 20 minutes or so. However, it will not hatch a new norn. I have one male and one female, and they mated, but when it came time for the egg to hatch it gave me a script error and shut the game down by itself.
Could GOG have sold me a defective version of the game, or should I try uninstalling and doing a reinstall? The only change I made was to download the encyclopedia nornica and use the skirty cheat. Could that have somehow corrupted my game? |

Which directory have you installed your game into? Have you tried the Remastered Patch?

It was installed in the GOG games folder like the other Creatures games. The world itself opens as a world.sfc file when clicking open on the world menu.
I have not tried the remastered patch. I'll give it a try. |

So all three files are in the main C:/ GoG Games / Creatures folder?

I tried the patch and haven't noticed a difference. Is there anything you have to do with the dll files that come with the patch? |

Malkin,
Yes, I have all three installed in the GoG Games folder. Now that I have all three games I am kinda worried that I will have to uninstall all three in order to do a reinstallation. Is that how it works or should it let me do one game at a time? |

It is now crashing everytime I put an egg in the incubator, not just when norns mate. It sounds like I'll have to reinstall the game. |

I meant, all three .vce files, (male.vce, grendel.vce and female.vce) not all three games.

Yes, all three vce files are in the main folder.
I noticed the crashing only happens when I use the world switch feature that goes with the cheat. So, now I'm only using the file from the original world.
Is there anyway around the game not recognizing other worlds? Like could I name one of the other world files world.sfc so it opens with the game, and maybe the crash problem won't happen when an egg hatches? I don't know, I'm kinda afraid to try it unless someone else has experienced it first. Has the world feature with the cheat worked for you? |

What 'world feature with the cheat' are you using? I've only ever used BORG to switch worlds in C1.

Do you mean the skirty/doctor cheat? I've never had any problems with that; you just have to be careful because it doesn't autosave (but that does make it nice for testing or resetting after things go wrong).
If you don't want to use that, then yes, you can rename another world to world.sfc and the game will open that instead of your original world. |

The world feature I was referring to was the one the skirty registry cheat opens.
I just found the Borg cheat and downloaded it, I'm gonna give it a try. Has it ever given you any problems? |

When you use BORG, you do have to use the 'cheats' menu to re-enable the auto save feature every time you play - the default in BORG is no saving.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll remember to select the audio save at the beginning of each time I play. Has there been any crashing on borg when you switch worlds, or does it tend to handle it better than the registry cheat? |

In Creatures 2 I'd also occasionally get the ". vce was not found" error, despite the file in question being present. I can only assume the game simply forgot where the file was located. |
