Creatures 3, missing eggs/agents

Hello all,

I just bought Creatures 3 recently and I've been playing it on my Mac using WineSkin. I've run into a problem with getting eggs in the game. When I try to start a world with eggs I can't get any to be dispensed. Clicking on the egg machine just makes a sound and nothing comes out. I can start a world from pre-created norns, but it is only one species and after breeding them for awhile they start having only male offspring (which obviously doesn't end well).

Another issue I've noticed is with the machine that's used to duplicate items in the game (the name escapes me at the moment). It has an error message on its screen that says something about agents being moved.

I imagine that something is going wrong with the storage of files on my computer, likely due to using WineSkin to play the game. I have checked the "My Agents" folder and it does have egg files in it (Fallow, Harlequin, Magma, and expressive). So I'm not sure why it isn't working.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I've searched all over the internet and haven't been able to come up with anything.

Thanks!

Where did you buy Creatures 3 from? If it's part of Creatures Exodus, it stores some of its files in the 'Documents' folder, but needs them to be in the main data folder. I know xan used to run a WINE edition of Creatures on their Mac - maybe their page on their setup might be more comprehensible to you than it is to me.

The 'only male babies' thing is due to a seasonal gender bias in eggs - there is a fix for this.

I still run that. Going strong on Sierra after finding the 16 bit color emulation hidden in Wineskin's plist file, since Sierra completely broke everything I had that could force the OS itself into 16 bit. (Wineskin insists on resetting the value every. single. time. I open its configuration utility. It's ds.app/Contents/Info.plist, the key Resolution, and the desired value novdx15sleep0, in case anyone finds this post on Google eventually.)

Are you playing just Creatures 3, or Docking Station with a docked world?

The 'sound' you describe the egglayer makes sounds like an error being thrown and caught, probably a missing file like you suspect.

If you're running the GOG build of either you need to install them into a certain subdirectory of My Documents. Basically, they tried to make it multi-user friendly, and split the game's vital files across Program Files and My Documents, except they did it wrong and it doesn't work, so installing it into My Documents is a stopgap to force it all into one place.

I think it might be My Documents/Creatures? See what folder exists under there in your existing install if applicable; you want them to overlap. I'm unsure myself because I use the original retail versions after getting fed up with the brokenness.

If you aren't running the GOG build I have no idea.

Thanks for reminding me my site is down, need to fix that tomorrow.

Thank you for the replies!

Malkin: It is part of Exodus, though I am only playing the Creatures 3 portion, haven't even looked at Docking Station. Thanks for the recommendation about the male offspring only, I will look into that fix.

xan: It is the GOG build, and I did notice what you said about the files being split between two locations. I tried to copy some over to see if I could make the two set-ups look the same, but that didn't seem to help. I will try to reinstall and direct it at my documents.

Thanks again!

Yeah, you'll have to reinstall it because just moving the files over by hand won't touch the registry entries for the game, which is where a large portion of the problem actually is.

Good luck.

Okay! So I installed the game to /My Documents/Creatures. Then I got an NLE0001 error, which I fixed after googling and creating the proper machine.cfg with correct information.

But now when I start Wineskin, it is just a black screen! I changed the Resolution in Info.plist to match your suggestion but still black screen. Any ideas? :(

not sure, but this is what my screen options look like if it helps. (you'll have to re-make any plist edits after touching this panel)
