I have a Windows 10 laptop and am attempting to play the GOG version of Creatures 2. I was able to do so for a while, but the other day, I got the DDERR_INVALIDPARAMS error. I tried the hex fix, but now I get this problem. So, I've been trying to get this to work on a Virtual Machine, but haven't been able to get it to actually play.
I am using Oracle VM Virtualbox and a Windows XP Virtual Machine. The VM is freshly installed, and the only thing on it is Creatures 2. I haven't been able to connect to the internet using the VM. I've set the VM to always display in 16 bit color. I'm not using any compatibility modes for the launcher. When I launch Creatures 2, it will open just long enough for me to see the toolbars, hear the incubator waterfall, and then displays this error. After dismissing the dialog box, the game closes, and the startup image will hang a bit before displaying the "An error was detected during startup. Creatures 2 may not function correctly" error. The whole thing closes once I hit OK.
I remember getting an error like this a very long time ago when I was playing the CD version of Creatures 2, but I can't remember how I fixed it. Do I need to update the VM's DirectX, or does WinXP come with one that should be strong enough to run this game? Is Windows 10 a lost cause? |

Have you tried expanding this error message to show you more details?

Have you looked at what version of DirectX your VM is running?

The VM has DirectX 9.0c.
Expanding the error message brings up a huge mess that I can't copy paste into anything. Not sure what's useful in there, but here are the first two screens of it, which lists the error and the application itself. It then lists several .dlls and eventually becomes a hex code mess.
Here's the text file it created.
Is there something in particular we are looking for that will clarify the problem? I can't make heads or tails of anything in the expanded error report. |

Hopefully with more information, someone will have an idea of what to do.
