So C2 was working fine (as fine as it can be on Windows 10, anyway). One day, I opened the game as usual and was met with this error:
"The error [DDERR_INVALIDPARAMS] has been detected when attempting to draw game sprites.
Please check that your desktop is in 16-bit mode, Microsoft DirectX is correctly installed and that you have the latest software for your graphics card.
Extra information: D:GOG GamesCreatures2Imagesdung.S16"
The game then crashes.
I am using the GOG version. The game is set to automatically run in 16-bit mode. My drivers and DirectX are up to date. I tried this fix, and the game now opens, but it looks like this (I guess it only works for Windows 7). What should I do?

The Gog version specifically says it does not support Windows 10, maybe this is why?

It worked before, it suddenly just started crashing like this. That's what is bugging me. |

Long shot, but are you using two monitors?
My game does the white/black drawing issue when I try playing the game on my 2nd monitor, but it works fine on the first.
I'm on Win7 though, so YMMV. |

According to the GOG forums, the black box fix for Windows 8 no longer works on Windows 10.

^ I find it works for me. The make-window-small and shove-it-in-corner solution, right?
Not sure if there's been some sort of version change or something. |

I just ran into this problem myself. The most frustrating part is that it used to work, and I guess it still "works" after the fix (you can hear creatures talking and the applets open), but you can't see a thing anymore. Just the hand smearing black.
I would also like to add that, at least in my case, uninstalling and reinstalling changes nothing. The creatures2.exe straight from install pops the DDERR_INVALIDPARAMS error and the hexedit reproduces the same black screen problem. Perhaps the problem lurks deeper, or elsewhere?
Functionality on Windows 10 is such a tease. |
