At this point, does anyone feel that there are too many forums? I'm thinking about doing some consolidating:
1. General/News
2. Help/Development
3. Strangeo/Writings
Perhaps having only three forums to check would make it easier for people to catch up and be active. I know personally for me when I view the Forums list it feels a bit daunting and time consuming to catch up on each and every one.
I also find it a bit redundant having a news forum when news posts can be commented on. It's almost like there are two separate conversations going on at the same time (ie Spilt Games).
If anyone else has suggestions on how to improve the forums, please let us know here.

I don't really feel like there is too many forums, and most of my catching up is done via the notifications system. However I do feel that merging those forums would be a good idea as it would make specific forums not as inactive due to the wider range of subjects which can be discussed within them, I think it could also possibly help the moderation team as they would have less forums to check as a result.
Edit: I agree with what some other people further down are saying about keeping Development and Help seperate. |

For the current size of our community, consolidating might be a good idea. But I feel the same way as Doringo, in that it doesn't feel overwhelming to me in its current state.

I also think the number of forums is fine as it is. However, it could be worth merging the Creatures Online forum with the News or General forum, and I wouldn't object to merging the Writings Forum with Strangeo.
I feel Help and Development should remain separate regardless of what else gets consolidated, though. The difference between the two is pretty notable to me that it wouldn't make much sense to consolidate them.

For me, where it really feels overwhelming is the comments feed. There have been some really good comment threads covering some interesting topics, but for me, they aren't as easy to read and follow. The forum thread for Spil Games has been easier for me to read because it's in chronological order (unlike the comments, which are newest first).

I second what Malkin's said about the comments feed being overwhelming at times! What's the solution though?
I don't really have any new ideas to bring to the table, but I think merging the Strangeo and Writings forums is a very good idea. The Writings forum rarely gets much attention anyway, so having an entire forum dedicated to writings feels like a bit of a waste. |

I'll echo what Grendel Man said about keeping the Help and Development forums separate. Asking about anything in regards to CAOS/scripting is a fairly different matter from someone asking about an ideal metaroom for X breed and as such I think it's important to give it that focused forum.
Merging them would leave things diluted and you would likely get a couple of threads buried early because an unrelated thread just happened to push it down. |

I know it's not the topic at hand, but here's an idea towards that: how about organising comments into collapsed topic lists? So, let's say a bunch of people replied to the same Bibble post-- in the comments feed, you'd see "[Someone's bibble blahblah] 4 new comments" and a clickable + next to it. Click the + and it expands showing the 4 comments.
That way, if we have a bunch of popular topics all going on at once, they'd amount to a few condensed topics in the feed, and you just expand the ones you're interested in.
That's probably really hard to code, though. |

I don't approach the forums on that level, and honestly I feel that over-consolidating could have the negative effect of making things harder to find. When I check, I just look for new threads, regardless of where in the forum they might be, so the number of forums does not impact me on that level. But I do think Development and Help, for example, need to be different, because otherwise threads about development stuff could bury more general help threads and vise versa.
Conclude with killer catchphrase.

Like Grendel Man, I would really rather the Help and Development forums remain separate. I think merging Writings with Strangeo is a good idea - I hardly ever see posts in the Writings forum, so it's not like they'd be flooding Strangeo, and they're no more or less on topic than any of the games there.
The comments feed can be overwhelming. Perhaps it needs a third option in addition to "all posts" and "my posts" - you could bookmark certain posts, and then set it so you'd only see comments on those in the feed. Is that feasible? |

I second what yulukyun,Lurhstaap and Grendel Man said about keep the development and help seperate,but perhaps merge writing and strangeo as one,but also maybe get that Creatures Online into either News or general (otherwise spilgames would allready have a seperate place by discussion right now,eh? )
I would be more confussed if the help and development was melted togheter.
Same goes for general and news (want them seperate) so you know what is new,and what is in general posted by other members. Just my opinion thought. |

Thanks for the input everyone! Based on the feedback Laura and I have merged the following:
Creatures Online -> General
Writings -> Strangeo
I think the rest will remain the same for now but please feel free to continue making suggestions.
I'll keep in mind all of the feedback regarding Comments and see if I can come up with a solution.

I feel that a sticky may need to be made for Strangeo to make the merge with the Writings forum a little less confusing. |
