FishingCactus wrote:
Hey Jillian, I guess it would be possible to organize a crowdfunding
(based on equity rather than donations) so that the core community can
get their hands back on the IP and project (with or without Fishing
Cactus).

But to be honest, the logistic to organize such crowdfunding and amount
of money required would be significantly high (>500.000€) and it
would also require Big Ben approval. In case the community wants to organize such approach we would be more than happy to help you in the process.

It sounds like equity is something like becoming a shareholder in Creatures Online. The price tag seems steep as well.

You can say "I guess you can do X" about anything, but that doesn't make it feasible (as that comment also says). The Creatures community is simply too small to raise the monumental amount of money this would take, and besides which, half of us never liked CO to begin with and would definitely not be pitching in. So cut whatever that imaginary figure would be in half.

Such an effort would raise a few thousand £, at best.

Take it from someone who's had this sort of pie-in-the-sky optimism for a failed game in the past- it's best not to place your hopes on very obviously futile efforts. It doesn't matter how "passionate" you are, how many emails you send out, or what execs you contact. If the money isn't there, nobody's going to bite.

Yeah, I have to agree, unfortunately. I have some experience with taking over a failing web-based game and trying to make it self-supporting, much less profitable, and let me tell you it is NOT easy. And that was with a game that already existed and, if incomplete, could actually be played by people to work up enthusiasm for supporting it. With a game that's not even extant yet, it's going to be nearly impossible. What this project really needs is an angel, but I don't think that's going to happen. Sad to say, a lot of good ideas die for lack of funding.

I hate to be pessimistic, but unless Fishing Cactus finds another publisher, I doubt we'll see Creatures Online any time soon, and as GimmeCat said, there simply aren't enough people willing to donate money towards crowdfunding the game.

The closest we could get towards a sequel would be the community making one themselves, but sadly all attempts in the past have either been abandoned or just forgotten about.

I would personally not donate for having CO back unless it's a very easily obtainable goal. If anything, people would have to get together and start building a new and far more attractive game to get others outside of the community to donate, then when there's stuff to show, like a pre-alpha would it maybe be feasible to get that amount of money. People aren't going to donate for just an IP and an 'idea' of what to do with it. Some guys tried this with Homeworld and it just didn't look legit at all, no matter their intentions, they just hadn't worked much on it yet.

Which, as always, brings us full circle to Grandroids. :P I know it's considered off-topic in CO discussions, but when it's literally the answer to the questions being posed, it's difficult to avoid mentioning it.

Pretty much. I wish I'd heard about Grandroids a lot sooner and I'll do whatever I can to support it. It's the closest thing we're realistically ever going to get to a Creatures 4 at this point.
