hi all,
my apologies if this is the wrong place to post this.
i have recently rekindled my creatures hobby, and am ecstatic that the community is still going strong. i've mostly hung around the dev forum of this site, but it's becoming clear to me that there is a need for more mirrors and hosting of files so that they don't disappear forever.
if any of you have copies of files that are hard to find, or even files that can only be found in a handful of places, please send them to me or let me know where i can find them. any creatures-related projects that you would just like saved somewhere else in the internet-verse are fair game too. i have a decent amount of webspace that i can devote to this endeavor, and would love nothing more than to give back to this community that has given me so much over my formative years.
happy holidays to y'all |

Not to take away the kind thoughtfulness of your offer, but be advised that it's worth trying to contact the original owners of any downloads, websites etc. first before rehosting them. For instance, SeeYou7.net has unfortunately gone down and it would be good if Mairenn could be made aware so she can put the website back up, if she wants to do that herself.
In my experience some authors can be quite protective over their works, due to the fact that they won't even allow them to be hosted elsewhere. In the absence of actual consent, I think we'd have to regard that as intent, and say for those that wouldn't allow hosting elsewhere, that has to be taken as non-consent for rehosting/mirroring.
I'm not trying to stop you doing what you want, or wish to hinder the preservation of our community but TL;DR:
In my view, it's better to seek permission if you can and if not, rehost at your own risk! Really, I'm just trying to warn you against any hassle down the road. Speaking personally though: I think it'll be a great feat to save any lost content, especially if you can pull it off without disgruntling anyone! I, for one, regret that I didn't make backup copies on my machine of TwilightCat and Trollop's agents. I really miss them now they can't be downloaded from anywhere! Such is life. |

of course i would do everything reasonably in my power to respect the rights of the creators! just as i would want my rights respected as well.
i plan to reach out to the authors of anything i host/mirror in the future, as i have already done since i joined this forum and hosted some things. that being said, i am willing to host stuff even if i don't get an official response from the authors - with the disclaimer that it is not officially endorsed by the original creators. i would also take down any of these theoretical files in question if people have a problem with them.
there is a lot of abandon-ware around, and i believe that some of these creators would be happy that their legacy lives on even if they aren't around on the scene anymore to give written permission. |
