So, whenever I try to start Creatures 3, I get this.
NLE0001: 'Main Directory' setting not found.
Windows NT/2000 6.1 build 7601 (Service Pack 1)
OriginalDisplay DirectX (no modules)

I've tried everything. I've done a complete reinstall and tried compatibility mode, but it won't start. |

I don't think it can find the main directory. What does your "machine.cfg" say? It should point to where you installed the game. If not try changing it to the proper file path.

By the way, .cfgs can be opened by EditPad Lite.
Your computer will make you choose a program to open the .cfg in though. |

Any text editor (notepad, etc) can open .cfg files as they're just plaintext. |

Where's machine.cfg?
EDIT: Upon further inspection, I don't have it. C3 appears to be missing a lot of files from the main directory. |

I had this error before, and it can be solved by recreating the Machine.cfg file. To start, open notepad and paste this, altering it according to where Creatures 3 is installed on your PC:
"Backgrounds Directory" "C \Program Files\\GOG.com\\Creatures Exodus\\Creatures 3\\Backgrounds\\"
"Body Data Directory" "C \Program Files\\GOG.com\\Creatures Exodus\\Creatures 3\\Body Data\\"
"Bootstrap Directory" "C \Program Files\\GOG.com\\Creatures Exodus\\Creatures 3\\Bootstrap\\"
"Catalogue Directory" "C \Program Files\\GOG.com\\Creatures Exodus\\Creatures 3\\Catalogue\\"
"Creature Database Directory" "C \Program Files\\GOG.com\\Creatures Exodus\\Creatures 3\\Creature Galleries\\"
"Display Type" 2
"Exported Creatures Directory" "C \Program Files\\GOG.com\\Creatures Exodus\\Creatures 3\\My Creatures\\"
"Game Name" "Creatures 3"
"Genetics Directory" "C \Program Files\\GOG.com\\Creatures Exodus\\Creatures 3\\Genetics\\"
"Images Directory" "C \Program Files\\GOG.com\\Creatures Exodus\\Creatures 3\\Images\\"
"Journal Directory" "C \Program Files\\GOG.com\\Creatures Exodus\\Creatures 3\\Journal\\"
"Main Directory" "C \Program Files\\GOG.com\\Creatures Exodus\\Creatures 3\\"
"Overlay Data Directory" "C \Program Files\\GOG.com\\Creatures Exodus\\Creatures 3\\Overlay Data\\"
"Resource Files Directory" "C \Program Files\\GOG.com\\Creatures Exodus\\Creatures 3\\My Agents\\"
"Sounds Directory" "C \Program Files\\GOG.com\\Creatures Exodus\\Creatures 3\\Sounds\\"
"Worlds Directory" "C \Program Files\\GOG.com\\Creatures Exodus\\Creatures 3\\My Worlds\\"
When you're done, save the file as Machine.cfg. Keep in mind you'll need to have enabled file extensions in order to change file types.
Hopefully this should solve your problem! |

A tiny bit of progress has been made. It now blackscreens on startup instead of straight-up throwing an error. Still unplayable, though. If it helps, the only files (not folders) that were installed in the main C3 directory by the installer are:
C3Manual (link)
Creatures 3 (icon)
engine.exe
language.cfg
zlib1.dll |
