Gonadotropin

I don't know if it's just malnourishment, or a genetic defect, but I thought I'd come here for help. My only Nova female that doesn't have the frog norn appearance gene has gotten pregnant, but is not producing Gonadotropin, and that's affecting the development of the egg: it's not growing inside her. I don't think it's a genetic defect because she's gotten pregnant before (with the help of a sperm pack) and her
hormone production was normal and she laid the egg with no trouble. If I had the advanced Science kit, I'd just inject a little at a time to simulate the natural increase in the hormone in her body, but that's not an option at the moment. I COULD use the Lay That Damn Egg! object, but I'm concerned without having developed it could cause some serious problems in the baby. Anyhow, just wondering if anyone's had this problem before.

I'm pretty sure that how "developed" the egg is doesn't affect the baby. The whole "egg growing" thing in the breeders' kit is really just a measure of how close the creature is to laying the egg. I once had a C3 Norn that I forced to lay an egg instantly after she got pregnant. The baby had no problems. I'm not sure if that's the same for C2, but it probably is. Sorry if I ruined anything for you by getting overly technical! [nblush]

No, I like technical. Technical explanations are a Godsend, haha. Update: The female in question did eventually lay the egg and the infant was fine. I've noticed something weird though. It might be a long lifespan or it might be everlasting life, or it might just be a VERY long adolescent period, but my Male Nova is over 2 hours old and still an Adolescent, which is weird because my first pair of Novas became Youths by the time they were an hour old.

Sounds like you've got a Norn stuck in an age on your hands. If he was aging normally before adolescence, even if he does progress to the Youth stage, he might never age again after that. I don't know how that stuff works. He might even fast-age to death if he hits youth.

In all the games, they age based on the level of life chemical (125) in their bodies and a set of aging genes (chemical receptors that monitor the amount of the life chemical, and trigger aging to a certain life stage when the life chemical hits a certain level)...

The creature starts out with an initial concentration of the life chemical, and a half-life for it which determines how fast it decays. This half-life is the biggest factor for determining their lifespan. They also have one aging gene for each life stage, from child to death... Each aging gene has a threshold for the life chemical, and it will trigger the creature aging to that life stage when the life chemical decreases to that level. The gene for the next life stage has a lower threshold, then lower, and so on, until the amount of life chemical left is so low that they reach the threshold that says they die of old age...

If I recall, in most genomes, these genes are all set so that they can mutate... (CFF and CFE have the possible mutations pretty constrained, to try and avoid immortals and fast-agers, but for the rest, pretty much anything can happen...) One way they can mutate is an aging gene may be cut, in which case the Norn would effectively 'skip' that life stage, and just age right to the next when it's time for the next one (going from adolescent straight to adult, for example... skipping the youth stage) It's even possible to take out all their aging genes this way, and they will stay a baby forever... or at least live their entire lives as a baby until they die. The aging genes can also mutate to raise or lower their thresholds, which would make that life stage come earlier or later. Stages can even start to overlap; this is another way they can skip a stage. For example, they might hit the threshold for youth before the one for adolescence if the gene for youth mutated to have the higher threshold... In that case, they will age from child right to youth, and then when the threshold for adolescence is reached, it will just be ignored... (they can't age backwards...) Whew... This explanation is longer than I thought... Hope it helped.

TL;DR: Your norn will probably just skip a life stage, and age to the next when it's time. It probably isn't horribly mutated.

Wait, that can actually happen in C2? In the C3 genomes, the genes for aging activate after the previous one has fulfilled its purpose, meaning that you can get creatures stuck in an age.

Fascinating! Truly wonderful stuff!

Yeah aging in C2 works the same exact way as C3... C1 too really, except C1 creatures didn't have genes and reactions gathered and separated into different organs by function... in C2 and C3, all those genes are together in one organ, still the workings are fundamentally the same. They really didn't change any of the genes themselves.

Didn't realize that skipping a stage from overlapping like that could make them get stuck permanently though, I thought it just ignored it and would still activate the next higher life stage when it's time, just like if that gene were missing.
