chemestry ?
Hello
I'm just not sure (And it would take a lot of time to figure out and need to buy all the games on GOG just to see who is the best out there) but I think it's what would make a game the best of the series for me.
Steve Grand only worked on the first so I would fear that Cyberlife only messed up the brain and biochemestry of the Creatures with each sequel but the first one even had a aging problem so....(and seems a bit primitive in comparison with C2 in most of the cases)
The second game had this severe attention bug but it has been fixed, the Creatures of the third seems to degenerate quickly after some generations and being hardcoded to be more "easy" to manage for the players (so more like automatons) but it's also the most moddable game so I wonder if there is not fixed breeds better than the C1 or fixed C2 norns, how good is the "Creatures with a lot of edits" genome ? (or maybe there is even better ones with the same objectives having a fixed and improved creatures, especially in the brain area ?) is there any mods to have tools of the same complexity as those of the first two games ?
What is the better for you between the C1 creatures, the fixed C2 creatures and the modded C3 creatures that you know ? (Obviously that's possible there is also good modded C1 or C2 creatures, it seems just less probable that the brain and neurochemistry can be really improved in the first two)
Thanks. |

C2 is my favourite, with what I consider to be the most 'natural' behaving creatures. I use JayD's modified Canny norns, with the wallbonking fix (fixed from Lis Morris' unsuccessful attempt to fix it). I don't think a lot of people know about this amazing version of the genome.
Regardless of genome, the intelligence and neurological capabilities of creatures are limited by the way the games are coded. We can continue to improve the balances of various chemicals, and add more interactions based on stimulus, etc, but ultimately we can't create any truly 'new' behaviours that aren't already in the game.
It's unfortunate that the trend of virtual life didn't really take off after the 90s. It was really popular for a while. But, for whatever reason (possibly the limited CPU power at the time), game developers opted to rely on finite state machines - which are essentially just series of complex IF/THEN script interactions - for game AI, even all the way up to the present day. True artificial life development and research has been limited to academia ever since. Grandroids notwithstanding, of course! |

I agree that C2 seems to be the most realistic. Creatures 1 relies too heavily on training, in my opinion, (I couldn't just hatch a bunch of eggs and let them go, I had to specifically teach them that food is good), whereas the Creatures 3 norns seem to be a little mindless, eating up everything, breeding whenever possible, etcetera. Creatures 2 will always hold a special place in my heart, anyway, because it was the first Creatures game I was actually successful in.

I would also vote for C2.
I know that some improvements were made in C3, and Vampess's CFE genomes in particular are really nice (I would definitely recommend CFE to anyone who wants to play C3/DS). But it still feels like too much was lost in the transition from C2 to C3 Norns to really be able to call them "better" in a generalized, all-around way.
Of course... that opinion hasn't stopped me from playing DS almost exclusively for the past ten years. The C1- and C2-to-DS conversions, the better world stability, ease of development, etc. wound up being more important to me than Norn intelligence. I still hope someone will come up with a more C2-like Norn for C3/DS some day, though.

CFF norns don't eat EVERTHING and they have a sensible breeding cycle.
If you get them, get the Janeway and Picard starter pair not the breed download as the breed download is an old version. |
