Hey, so it's been a long time-- and I never followed the genetics or brain side of creatures that closely in the first place, so I'm doubly lost. I know there has been more than one 'overhaul' of the C3/DS genomes to replace broken functionality (eg. colortrue creatures(?), amanora's genetics) and add missing ones (eg. CFE). I also know that they tend emphatically not to be compatible when breeding.
Has someone made a sort of synopsis or FAQ of what 'options' there are recently for populating a new world with overhauled creatures, and which can breed with which? If not, would anyone be kind enough to catch me up on it? |

I don't think there is an FAQ anywhere, so here is my horribly biased opinion! The main gene overhauls are the CFE, Gizmos, and the CFFs and all of them can technically be bred together. I say technically because you won't run into any major problems like sliders, but you will get some really weird Norns. The CFFs and CFEs are probably a bit safer to crossbreed then Gizmos. With the Gizmos, you will likely get some weird genes in there.
The CFEs are the "gold standard" for breeds anymore. They are more social, remember things a bit better, and are all around smarter then the original genomes. You really can't go wrong by downloading them. Just be sure to install them correctly.
The original Gizmos are quite a bit different from other Norns, and I really can't explain them any better then the wiki does. I'd like to recommend the CFE Gizmos over the originals though, since they combine the best of both breeds. A bit of a warning, the second batch of Gizmos on that page, the updated ones, act a bit weird in my game. That might just be my game, since no one else has complained about them.
The CFFs are the most recent overhaul and are still being worked on. They are an improved version of the CFE Norns, and are starting to look fairly good. More info can be found in this thread here, since I can't really explain them that well either. The most up to date version of them is here.
The Colortrue breeds are usually just CFE Creatures with very, very nice color genes. It really depends on who made them though. The original Corlotrues are CFE. The Pearl Mermaid Norns are CFE with some changes made to them, mostly to help them survive a bit better underwater. The Chameleon Ettins are a weird mix of CFE, CFF, and Gizmo, if I remember correctly. They shouldn't be bred with regular creatures, since their pigment genes make cross breeding very tricky. It can be done though, and I've ran a successful woflling run with some Colortrue Grendel hybrids before.
Amanora's breeds/genomes have a huge problem with crossbreeding and I don't think they are CFE. There are CFE versions of them somewhere, I think. They produce sliders and Norns who only want to walk right or left. Both of those mutants will die, unless you inject them with everything they need to survive. They are gorgeous breeds, but I try to avoid them after getting one to many sliders.
TL;DR for the breed compatibly: CFE, CFF, Colortrue, and CFE Gizmos are all pretty good choices. CFE and CFFs can be crossbred without to many problems. Gizmos can be crossbred with CFEs and CFFs, but you might run into problems. CFE Gizmos can be crossbred with CFEs and CFFs, but you still might run in to problems. Colortrues shouldn't be bred with anything else besides other Colortrue breeds. I'm not really to sure Amanora's genomes.

thanks so much! that answers my question, and a lot more exhaustively than I'd hoped for.
though if anyone wanders along and can add anything else i'll check that out too |
